Thanks for posting this! I'm the lead @ Impact Soundworks. Though I didn't design+record this, yes, admittedly "cinematic" is getting a bit overused, along with "epic"... but in this case it really felt like the right word to use. If it were just a toy piano deeply sampled, it wouldn't be appropriate. But there was an incredible amount of material captured going way beyond traditional toy piano sounds, like horror textures with bows, tone clusters, totally re-synthesized and processed sounds, LOTS of percussion, etc. Some of the deep percussive hits sound absurdly large somehow. You can read a bit more from Ali, the guy who actually recorded all the material, at DesigninSound.org (seach: "toy piano")
If I had to compare with Spitfire's toy piano, I'd say the key difference is that Curio includes an awful lot of additional stuff besides the standard toy piano sounds (mallets & plucks across 25 keys). A lot of the designed sounds are really gorgeous, and the percussion alone is enough to create entire tension cues IMO. Of course I may be a bit biased... but again just check the demos (particularly the 'naked' ones) and you'll hear for yourself the range of sounds/patches here.
