Import MP3s Converting To WAVs?

Hello!
I'm importing an MP3 file into my Sonar project. When I look at the source, it points to a .WAV file that was created when I imported the MP3 file. I'm wanting to keep the Cakewalk project file as small as possible, so hoping that I can use the compressed MP3 version.
Do I have any options, am I importing wrong, or is this just how Cakewalk works?
Thanks!
Jay

Sonar will convert imported audio to wave file format, and I don't believe it will allow compressed MP3 files to remain compressed when they are imported to your project.

You can, of course, export audio from Sonar to MP3 format (using either freeware or buying the MP3 encoder license from Cakewalk).

I don't think there are any DAWs which allow working in MP3 format - or...?

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
