Importing Project Into Existing Projects - Not Responding
I have two projects. One, project 'A' will be the final project but I have some bounced audio tracks and clips from another project, project 'B' that I've been 'borrowing' from to use in project 'A'. I now want a little more control over the original clips in project 'B' so I decided to drag, from the browser project 'B' into project 'A' so I could get at the raw data in project 'B.' Not good. The first thing that happened was it killed my original project 'A'. It could no longer be opened. I had to use an auto saved version. I 'saved as' and thought I'd try again. This time I can see all the clips and they look like they were imported fine but the audio engine light is off and it won't play or respond at all. Anytime I click anywhere on the screen I get that little 'not responding' message. That lasts for a couple of minutes then it turns off but still no response. Is there a trick to importing projects into projects? Or is this just a disaster waiting to happen?

I tried dragging project 'B' into a new project and it looked fine but Session Drummer 3 did not come along with it. I can probably get that to work and at least it plays but still not ready or willing to try dragging into my other project. Of course getting Session Drummer 3 into the project is almost the WHOLE idea so I can have more control over my drum sounds. I'll try a couple more approaches. Otherwise I'm left with modifying sound in one project and exporting/importing sounds into the other. Maybe I'll try the other way around?

I was able to drag project 'A' into project 'B' (not the other way around) but none of the effects came with it. Maybe that's to be expected? Anyway dragging one project into another might be left for the more adventuresome. I thought it was a 'feature' of X1b but proceed at your own risk. In this case it represents way more work than it's worth and if I didn't have auto save I probably would have lost that project even with using 'save a's and having more than one copy as the second try ended up killing BOTH good projects.

I decided to drag, from the browser project 'B' into project 'A' so I could get at the raw data in project 'B.' Not good. Are you saying that with Project B closed, you navigated to Project B's audio folder via the Media Browser, and dragged raw audio files in Project A? That should work. EDIT: On re-reading, I see you are tlaking about dragging whole CWP project files. I tried it, and it seemed to work okay, but the results might depend greatly on the project content, especially when dragging pre-X1 projects into X1.

Thanks Brundle, Yeah this is the first time I've tried to drag an entire .cwp file. It was created in X1b as was the other project. I'm going to try a track template next. I've always had good luck with those.

Am I the only one who has their own internal dialog on these forums? Pretty funny. Anyway here's what I found because I have a curious mind and maybe it will help someone else. My original intent was to use one project file as a sort of sound design canvas where I could build drum grooves and shape sounds and try different things out, then import those sounds into the main project. It all went really well actually but I always had in the back of my mind that I would eventually want Session Drummer in the main project, not just the raw audio, so I could have more control over the MIDI sections, fades, instrument mutes etc. That moment came where I wanted Session Drummer and 4 audio files that I had custom created to be a part of the main project. Dragging the entire project in created a mess as described in the OP. Dragging the other way left out too many effects and automation. So I then created a track template of the test project and dragged that in but of course it was only a template so the MIDI data and audio was missing. So I THEN imported the project into project that now had the template - and it worked. Weird. I just tried dragging the project only and it crashed again and I'll probably lose that project file to corruption. (When it happened before that file could not be opened again). But having the track template there worked for some reason. Weird. Is there a moral to this story? Probably. Maybe don't assume a 'feature' is actually going to work. Auto Save. Save as. Do all your work in one project file. (I'm probably the only one who doesn't - or didn't)

Is there a moral to this story? Yes: "Never leave your bike parked outside overnight with snacks under the seat when you live in bear country." Oh, wait, that's the moral to my story. YMMV (your moral may vary).

Good one Brundle. I was in the Sierras way, way back there and woke the next morning to huge bear paw marks on my truck. IF we had left any food in there it would have all over for the truck. Poor bicycle.

Hi HumbleNoise, If ever you still had VST/VSTi in your project "B", you might want to try to open your project in safe mode (SHIFT+OPEN), and if possible, load the project with no plugins. that I guess could help. Just a tought.. Cheers ! V

I'm guessing HumbleNoise got past the issue. The original post is over a year old.
