Importing files from the GarageBand iPad app
Hi, I've been using the GarageBand app on my iPad as a sort of sketch pad. Is there an elegant/efficient way to get those sketches into SX2 other than to play the tracks one at a time? I'm basically not sure I can re-create some of the feels of the demo and want to just import the tracks. Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

You should be able to export your tracks to AIFF format and import them into Sonar.

If I'm on the go, I usually either upload them to Soundcloud as waves or Dropbox. Then, when I get home, I download the files and import them into Sonar.

I'd like to bump this thread with a related (hobbiest) question if I may. What I'd really like to do is get a GarageBand sketch into Sonar as MIDI. (I'm aware I can't export from IOS as MIDI.) Celemony has a sale on now for upgrading to the full (polyphonic) Melodyne. How good would Melodyne be at converting a GarageBand generated audio import (into Sonar) back to MIDI?

Hi,
I've done this with varying results. I used a piano part from Garage Band. The timing seemed to be off after Melodyne converted it to MIDI. It works best when the sounds you're using are dry (no reverb, delay, etc ...). It's not perfect. But, with some tinkering, you can get good results.
Hope that helps.

Thanks, that does help. I'm not familiar with Melodyne - even the basic version that came with my X3. Sounds like no version of it will midify a multi-timbral audio file. IOW, the GB "song" would need to be exported track by track. Would appreciate hearing if I've got that wrong. Thx again, Ron

You have it correct. Unless, one of the gurus here know something that I don't (which is very possible). I'd still look into getting the upgrade if I were you. If you want convert a part like a piano or guitar that has various tones in it to MIDI, it will come in very handy. Especially, if you like something on Garage Band, but want to swap out your own sounds. As I said, it can take a little fiddling, but you can pull it off.

I'm not a Guru , I do like Garage Band and use it every so often …. a couple of things off the top of my head …. getting midi out of GB is almost a waste of time because its a locked DAW haven said that the easiest way I know how to get midi out of G B is to open the G B project up in Logic , once in Logic merge all the individual clips so each midi track is one continuous track … if you don't merge them , each separate loop / GB grove clip is gonna end up with it's own track when you export the project as a midi file …. if you don't have access to Logic to open the GB project up in to grab the midi and export as midi , you can still get very decent results by working with the audio end of GB in your DAW of choice a lot of people don't know that GB can do 32 bit audio exports it's called track lock and it is hidden in plain sight ... here's a link to access and grab 32 bit audio out of GB ... I know its not the original topic , but if you have a thing happening in GB , you will be able to put it in the DAW of your choice as a high rez audio file I've used this approach many times …..before I got Logic , and it works very good http://www.delora.com/tips_and_trends/export_garageband/export_garageband.html hope this helps , Kenny

No Logic - in fact the iPad is the only Apple product here. I'll bookmark that link, though it looks like it's targeted for GB on a Mac, not the iPad. There is track lock in the iPad version, but so far, I'm not clear what it does. (Doesn't seem to prevent all editing.) I don't think audio files are being written to internal storage - ie. the "trick" in the link - because even after I set it, the (horrendous) latency over bluetooth (I have a Pioneer receiver compatible with Apple's Airplay) is not improved. Maybe that's irrelevant, but anyway, it's for a different forum.... Thx for the response. (Understood you weren't addressing my concern directly.) -Ron kennywtelejazz .............
