In Need Of Some Mixing Advice For This Jazz Tune
Hi there, This is my "jazz trio" performance of Stella By Starlight. http://soundcloud.com/zbbzspam/ I've uploaded a dry mix - with only Guitar Rig(amp modeling) applied to the bass and guitar, and slight EQ on the tracks. and also one with some mixing plugins I throw in and chose the most-fitting presets for, just by how it sounds, without too much attention or knowledge of what I'm doing... Known issues: 1) The vocalist volume is inconsistent, probably because she didn't stay at the same distance from the mic. 2) There also a lil' bleed from the guitar and some more noticeable bleed of double bass in the vocals. which makes issue 1 harder to triumph with compressing. Thx in advance.

I was only able to access the first mix, but it seems your problems are minor. You should be able to manage the vocal with volume envelopes or a gate. However, in a live jazz performance, a little bleed is acceptable and maybe even desirable in certain instances. You have good material to work with.

I got the first one. Sounded very nice. The main issue I had is the frequency battle between the guit and vocal. I would cut 4-5 db of something out of the guitar. Maybe somewhere in the 1k- 4k area to let the voc fit better. Either that, or, sidechain a compressor on the guit from the voc. I's also bring the bass a little more center.

there seemed to be a lot of fret noise on the bass... that might have been hidden better with a high roll off on the bass. it sounds pretty cool.

I re uploadeded the dry mix, if I can hear some advice about that one I'd be gald to work through what the plugins preset did right... @Lynn: I don't the bleed so much and I agree it can sound good in this style of music but I'm more concerned about the inconsistent loudness of the vocals...

listening again..... it seems the instruments could be lowered by a few db to let the vocals come through. The vocalist is good. I think lowering the instruments would make a difference to the vox. From what I could tell, the vocal levels sounded pretty consistent over all. wow.... the bass at 1:06 to around 2 minutes is really irritating. (sorry, JMHO! ) bad tuning issues happen between the bass and guitar in this section, when the guitar solo's the piece looses it's cohesiveness and flow..... there needs to be something solid happening and the bass is still running at that same time. Maybe have the bass playing some chords to provide a foundation for the solo guitar. Dry mix: the vocals seem even lower.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the help and positive feedback(indeed the vocalist is good :-)). Remixed : click [I redid the sound for the bass, tweaked the guitar vs. vocals. dealt with the vox volume and also switched ezmix(yes I'm a mixing noob) with a regular master limiter on the master bus so at least if something is needed to be done on the master bus I know what's missing with your gracious help guys :)] @tmidi: I cut some 4500 out of the guitar, and indeed is sounds mellower and helps the vox come out. I didn't cut anything in the 1-4 because it made the guitar sound too close - and because it's an archtop with the way I EQed it it sounds close as it is. what frequency do you think I can emphasize with the guitar so not all it's EQ is cut or straight? @Guitarhacker: How would you cut the highs for the bass? high pass until what frequency? cause I tried some high pass but it didn't really cut it out... @foxwolfen are you referring to the dry mix or regular mix? kev1: somewhere between 4-6?

Here's another remix try(it's the 3rd mix): http://soundcloud.com/zbbzspam/ Issues: 1) The bass doesn't come out enough as an independent instruments, it's very noticeable during the bass solo - I want people to actually hear his melody...

This is an easy one to mix as there are only three elements. Firstly, the guitar is too far back in the mix in mix three. I would suggest panning it off 25-35% to the left or the right and pan the vocalist the same amount in the opposite side. Leave the bass down the middle....I guess that this would make it a variation of your second mix. The bass sounded better on mix 2 as well. In general, I didn't care for the 3rd mix at all. I'd also suggest using either a common small room reverb for the vocal and guitar OR a dark plate reverb on the vox and a small room on the guitar. Leave the bass dry. The bass could also use some tweaking, but I'd have to have it "a la carte" to figure out what I'd do to improve it's tone. Cheers, J

http://soundcloud.com/zbbzspam Hey Guys, I changed WRGKMC's mix just a bit , and also applied similiar mixing to another song that was recorded that day (foggy day) - foggy day is faster and has better rhythmic feel, and I think it sound pretty good, better than stella. What do you think?

Sorry, its a bit difficult to figure out what version I am supposed to be listening to. But I took a listen to Foggy Day and it is absolutely perfect. As for the vocalist, I am not hearing any significant inconsistency (Stella 4th mix). Fantastic work.
