In Search of Fortitude
Hi, I should tell you something about this piece... but please don't get too depressed when you read about it...! https://soundcloud.com/purplerhapsody/in-search-of-fortitude First things first - I don't usually write in A flat minor, in fact this is probably the first piece I've ever written in that key and I found it an amazingly interesting key to work in. The whole reason for this piece existing is that last week I was recovering from bad news and stress about two family member's medical conditions and then I found out that my uncle has liver cancer! At the same time I was on Jury Service trying to discuss with the rest of the jury what the verdict should be on a horrible murder case and everything got on top of me. I felt low and stressed and decided to turn to my old friend, the piano. What came out isn't a jolly piece but I hope you enjoy it anyway. It's called "In Search of Fortitude" and I actually found some in the act or creating this piece. I've heard it said that there can be no art without emotion and I guess in the case of this piece that is completely true. Oh and things are less stressful now - two family members are much more stable/better, my Jury Service is over, and I'm coming to terms with my uncle's condition... Thanks for listening, Terry.

Hi Terry, glad things are less stressful at the moment. This is a beautiful piece of music even if it is in A flat minor ; ) You really should consider a poor guitarist trying to play along ; ) Seriously I really enjoyed this, nice use of dynamics and a really dramatic performance. Glad to hear you found some solace in music, I know how it feels. Rik

Nice work Terry...I see you tend to hit the keys a bit hard at times too :)...It fits well though. Nice resolve at the ending. Been a tough one around here too. This week : Two people I know have cancer..one is terminal for sure. A 6 year old girl almost died from diabetes. Her parents didn't know what was wrong with her. Another aquaintence is having some serious issues in their marriage and it's tearing them apart. ...maybe I need to write a song.

Hi, thanks for listening and commenting! Rikkie - I'll be more considerate in my choice of key next time, or you could just detune your guitar on all strings rather than just a couple ;-) Thanks for the compliments :-D Tim (Starise) - Sorry to hear about the bad news, you should certainly write a cathartic song if it's all getting to you! I'm not sure what you mean by hitting the keys a bit hard... I actually bashed the living daylights of them ;-) Seriously though, I'm a firm believer that there's nothing wrong with taking out tough emotions with a bit of drama on the piano... as long as you give them a lighter bit every so often (if only so your arms and wrists can recover a little)! Cheers, Terry.

Well, if this is you writing in Ab minor I think you should do it more often! The emotion, at both ends, seems to come across very well both in the melodies and (very much so) in the dynamics. Very well written and played. And I really liked the way it ended...

It starts sad and lonely. You have such feeling in your writing and playing. True emotions and not some contrived spirit. That's what I appreciate about you Terry. I am sorry for the sadness in your life. We all have something in our lives at times to be crushed by. We just pick up and keep moving the best we can. At the 3rd segment, you go positive with more light. That is where we need to go - toward the light the best way we can. Beautiful. Jimmy
