I think they dug a hole under the fence and crawled out. At least that's what mine did until I buried chicken wire in the ground all along the fence line to keep them from digging.

Didn't they just dig deeper? Especially after you left the soft soil from burying chicken wire?

Didn't they just dig deeper? Especially after you left the soft soil from burying chicken wire?
Well, actually you don't bury it. I mis-spoke. You roll it out flat on the ground along the fence line and cut up a bunch of #9 wire and bend in to 'U' shapes and pound in the ground to hold the chicken wire flat. They don't like walking on it or digging on it. It takes a couple of years, but eventually the grass grows up through it and it disappears in to the ground. By that time you've broken them of the habit of digging along the fence line. The hardest part of the whole project was cutting the hooks out of #9 wire, that's tough stuff, but I had a bunch left over from another fence project so I put it to good use.
