Incidents that change your gear lust.
There's nothing like an expensive auto repair that changes your attitude about future software acquisitions. I had to replace a fuel pump at $721. So now I delete most of my "sale" emails. The only things I bought were the $20 Pro Channel Limiter and the Solid State Symphony upgrade. I thought about requesting prices for a fuel pump in the Deals section. The reality is it is not a DIY project. It's a small GMC truck and you either have to remove the bed or drop the fuel tank. I left that to people who know what they are doing. So if you have a fuel pump go it is one of the most expensive repairs.

As an Auto Engineer for over 15 years I know what you're saying. I started out as a Mechanic (for 5 years) and it was ridiculous. Not only what we charged, but what we had to go through to do certain things. Then you had to deal with "you put Air in my tire and my fuel pump went out and I want you to replace it" people... Everybody wants something for nothing...and it doesn't matter how much you do for them it's never enough...they always want more...

kitekrazy1 So now I delete most of my "sale" emails. The only things I bought were the $20 Pro Channel Limiter and the Solid State Symphony upgrade. Just because it's on sale doesn't mean you have to buy it! Easier said than done, right? Tell that to my wife! No worries. It's okay to save. About 99% of the deal threads just get me interested in the product, but I never buy. Only once in a blue moon. No need to, really; all the plugins (typically making up the bulk majority of deal threads) are all about the same in some form or another.

Don't feel alone. I just spent a good deal of money to replace the egr valve on my old blazer. Two days later, it's sitting there with a water pump spewing water like Niagara Falls! You just can't win.

Kitekrazy1, ethanol is causing a lot of fuel pumps to die an early death. You didn't state what year you truck was but if it is more that 4-5 years old be sure to add an ethanol stabilizer with each tank full of gas.

I recently got stung with a fine of $2000 from the Worker's Compensation Board in New York for a short, accidental lapse in coverage. I know it's technically a business expense but that has sure put the kibosh on any major audio related purchases for a while.

I changed the fuel pump on my old Bronco II once. It was in the fuel tank, fortunately there wasn't much gas in it. As it turned out it wasn't a big deal. It took my buddy and me a few hours and a bottle of Tequila. Rocky

I got over 220,000 miles off that fuel pump. It's a 99 Sonoma. Best vehicle I ever owned. I haven't had to replace the headlights yet. It was dying a slow death when about 5 years ago the gas gauge went.

Last week after laying out for a brand new radiator , antifreeze and the required labor costs 's to put it in (4 hrs ) I thought I could breath a sigh of relief , but boy was I wrong .The very next day I walked past my car while taking my dog for his morning walk and saw a large green puddle under my car in it's parking space … I kid you not when I say this …when I saw that … I named my car What's Next ? A couple of days ago I wound up paying for the parts and labor to have the water pump and timing belt changed … I'm still holding my breath and I've got my fingers crossed. I sure hope that What's Next ? doesn't get a wild hair up it's tailpipe and decide to bring me into The Championship Rounds of car maintenance …. Kenny

I had to replace my radiator twice in 3 years. It's not the radiator that was the problem but the cheap fittings on the radiator.

20 years ago this month I went round a roundabout (do they have them in the US?). Like any tight bend visibility of the road surface round the curve was limited and I saw the dozens of roofing tacks scattered all over the road just in time to see them disappear under the bonnet (that's "hood" in US speak). Multiple punctures so the breakdown service got me home then off to get four not exactly cheap new tyres suitable for a Mk 5 XR3i. To replace the set of now wrecked brand new tyres I bought the month before.
And three weeks later I went out to the car to see.... a flat tyre with an unidentifiable chunk of metal firmly stuck in it. Probably a present from a demolition/building site just up the road.
How to spend about £800 on tyres in less than two months.

I have realized that at some point the benefit of no car payment is out weighed by the high cost of repairing an old vehicle. That's when I bite the bullet and get a new car payment. Rocky
