Increase volume of midi drum map note

I already dragged the velocity for the note to the highest. I just want the note to be more louder. I have tried to copy and paste the note but it doesn't get any louder. Also is there a way to make a midi clip faster like in audio tracks? If it was an audio clip what I do is IIRC hold down shift and drag the ends of the clip to make the clip sound faster and slower. Is there a way to do this in MIDI?

Thanks

In MIDI you speed things up by altering your Tempo.

What are you using as a source for your drums? Most have some sort of volume or trim control on their GUI

You can edit the midi easily.

    Do this:

Open the STAFF view and find the note in question. This should be easy. If you put the position maker directly before the note is played, then open staff view, the staff view opens in the same place.... slightly before that note. I like to have about a measure or two in front of the note.

OK.... Now, right click on the note. A new window opens called NOTE PROPERTIES . In it, you have ALL the parameters of the note available for editing. Including volume and time. The time involves the duration of the note and the starting point of that note.

need to make it louder, type in the new volume up to 127. Increase the number in the duration to make a quarter into a half or whole or longer, decrease the starting time to move the note "forward" in time to make it start sooner. example: where  4:3:257  is the existing starting point... ( the note sounds in Measure 4 but slightly after beat 3) and the note is dragging...manually change to 4:3:000 to move it up directly on measure 4 beat 3.  highlight the 257 and type 000.

    hope this helps.

Jone: If I alter the tempo won't the whole track be altered? I only want a portion of the track or a clip to change tempo and same goes for the volume.

Guitar: The velocity or as you say "volume" is already at 127. Is there something I did wrong here or is there another way to increase the volume of a specific note?

Each midi synth has 2 tracks associated with it....the midi source and the audio output for the synth. Be sure both  of their volume faders are up. Velocity will also affect how loud a given note is and is not the same thing as volume, although it does affect how loud a note is depending on it's level.

If that doesn't get you loud enough.... go into the drum synth's GUI and see if there is a dedicated master volume. Many synths have one and it is normally set to default at about 60% or so. Turning it up may solve the issue.

If that doesn't work, the other option is to turn everything else down, and crank the master levels or the monitors, but I'm thinking you will solve it before having to do this .

If I put the volume faders up it increases the whole tracks volume. I only want to increase A NOTE volume e.g snare and not the whole track to get louder. For example I am running SD3 and on a clip (not the whole track) I want ONE of the snare hits to be louder.

I hope this makes more sense

    Thanks

velocity is not the same thing as volume, but it's often confused as such (sometimes even by vendors creating softsynths).

if you only want the SNARE louder and not the other parts of the kit then there are several ways to do it, but the best way, IMO, is to use separate outputs if your softsynth has that capability.

    which softsynth are you using?

One way would be to put a volume envelope on the Midi track and edit the envelope to make that note louder. Another way would be to use cc7 (volume).

this is what you do for one note!  go into the PRV, use the pull down menu in the upper right hand corner to select MIDI Controller value = 7 VOLUME and increase the volume using the pencil tool in the controller pane to taste.

cc stands for continuous controller. They are used to modify midi data. Examples of midi continuous controllers are pitch bend, modulation, sustain, volume, etc. Think of cc#7 as a volume control that overrides the volume slider on the track.

Do you really mean that you want one clip to play in a different tempo from the rest of the instruments that play back at the same time? Or do you mean you want to insert a tempo change in the project?

If you want a single MIDI clip (that already has been recorded) in a multitrack project to play in a different tempo, I believe you must open it in a new project, change the tempo and then bounce it to audio. Inserting this audio  to the original project it will maintain it's "off tempo".

If the clip has not been recorded yet, you can of course play it freehand in whatever tempo. In case it has to be an exact tempo, you need a hardware metronome. Or maybe there are VST metronomes than can play whatever tempo independent from the projects tempo (????)

As mentioned, "velocity" mustn't be confused for "volume".

It's Midi. Easy enough to just re-write the part. How many measure is the part you want to play faster?

Re:Increase volume of midi drum map note 2011/08/13 16:38:59 (permalink)
I told you in post #3 to do this>>>>  you must RIGHT CLICK on the note in the STAFF view. A window opens and gives you access to the NOTE PARAMETERS including the STARTING TIME of the note. You can change the numbers in the box and thereby change the STARTING TIME of the note. Decrease the number to make it sound sooner, increase it to make it sound later.......

If you do this, it will allow you to move the note in the time frame.....so it sounds sooner......or later, then where it was originally. Using this method beats dragging the note and is way more accurate and down right surgical.

On the volume: If the note is already at 127 on volume and 127 on velocity (they are different but do similar things) Volume is pure loudness, whereas velocity involves not only volume but character of the note....for example if you hit a piano key lightly, it has a smoothness to it, but as you hit the key harder, the tonal characteristic changes since the hammer is striking the strings harder and that makes for a different quality as the hit strength increases... that is a better way to describe MIDI Velocity..... but bumping it to 127 will also result in the maximum volume as well.

OK so... if the note is already at 127/127 and the note can not get any louder, the only option that I'm aware of is to go in and reduce the volume and or velocity of ALL the notes in that instrument's track and then go back to that one note and raise it again....this time it will be louder than the others.

In Jamstix, and very likely many other drum synths, you are able to set a default volume & Velocity level as a default. Never have it set to 127/127 since that gives you no options to do what you are seeking.

It might be  a lot of work to lower the entire midi track V/V levels but that might be the only way to do it....... OR.......

you could bounce it to audio, where it is no longer limited by the velocity & volume of the synth, convert it to audio and then you can easily envelope it or use PROCESS AUDIO> AMPLIFY> and pick a number to increase to.......

    hope this helps
