Increased RAM to 4GB but see only 3007 MB !

In hope to increase PC stability with SONAR, I have added 2 GB of RAM (two slots) on a machine that had 2GB. My math basics tell me that I should see 4GB (more or less 4000 MB) under WIN VISTA 64 bit but on computer properties, I only see 3007 MB...

I was told that an XP 32 bit system could not see more than 3.25 GB but we talk about a full 64 bit (hardware and OS) here. Aside of possible defective RAM, could there be another explanation for that ?

Thanks,
Rob

It is quite a long shot but I had a stick fail to seat properly on first install even though it seemed like it did.

I removed it and reseated it and it was recognized instantly.

FWIW XP 32 bit seeing only 3.25 GB isn't written in stone. It depends on particular installed devices that are sharing the virtual memory address space and how much memory they occupy.

Probably the Bios, when I added 4 gigs to my computer, I had to change a motherboard setting to map larger amounts of ram.

Indeed, check your bios for some type of memory mapping (or remapping) setting.

What type of motherboard do you have?
For ASUS, it's called memory remap. Don't know about the others.

    Thanks guys.

I used memory remap - Now under Vista 64 I can see the 4GB, but when booting under XP (32bit) I only get what I had before adding RAM : 2GB ... I read from some sources that this is XP related (although I had read a lot about people using 4GB way long before Vista, or did I dream about it?...) Others say it's ASUS related.
