Insert same effect on multiple tracks at once/Forcing FX Chain position in PC

Alright... this is probably just something that needs to be done manually one at a time but I am checking just in case I am missing something.

Problem: A pile of tracks that need the same effect inserted on all of them (in this case GR5 and I'd like to have a specific preset loaded but that's a little ahead of what this is about). These effects will also have to be kept consistent as tweaks occur (and linking VSTs is not possible).

So I can't just select all the tracks, hold Ctrl and insert the effect into the bin. Just doesn't work. Maybe there is a trick. If so I would like to know the trick.

One workaround. I can insert multiple FX Chain modules into selected tracks at once BUT they are empty AND they show up at the bottom. I don't want them at the bottom (I also tried moving the module while holding Ctrl with the tracks selected and only the currently "active" track registers the move).

Anyway... I've always done this the long way around and manually (like Ctrl dragging things from bin to bin). Since I am dealing with sooooo many tracks in this project I was really hoping to find a bulk insert method (and ideally a bulk replace method as I tweak stuff... I already know you can't link effects in the bin which sucks and I posted an FR about it a while back).

My preliminary tests today are really pointing to what I thought. I'm going to have to do this track by track. I may be able to work out some way of using Track Templates or PC Presets (which would ignore the FX Bin I think so I would absolutley have to use an FX Chain).

The question is... how does everyone handle this type of thing? I doubt there is any one answer so just toss 'em out. Anything helps.

And no... I can't rely on busses for these types of effects because they need to be on the tracks themselves for individual tweaks.

Also Track Templates at this point are gonna suck because the tracks are all already set up to a certain point so doing that would, I think, make me have to do a bunch of crap over and I would just have to repeat it every time I made a change.

Just want to insert an effect, or series of effects, across multiple tracks at once (and preferably with presets already loaded which may not even be remotely possible because how do you open a plug to a preset? Ugh).

Yeah... just looking to save some time and make things easier. This unfortunately does not seem to be one of the easier things to do in Sonar.

Cheers and thanks.

    Hi Beeps,
I don't think there is a way to do it other than manually one at a time. That's how I have always done it anyway....well, I add one other step: grumbling that there really ought to be a be a better way to to this.

FWIW, I timed how long it took to ctrl-drag an effect into 24 tracks in Console view, and it was 30 seconds. I just don't see that as a big deal given how rarely I need to do something like that, but I guess others feel differently.

I don't think this is the point.

When I'm in a creative place, I don't want my flow slowed down for 30 seconds having to do something that should take me 2. This can be done easily in Pro Tools. I don't think its asking for the moon to ask for it, and other things people have been asking for in Sonar. The DAW should get out of the way of creativity.

Moving multiple tracks at once is a common request where response has been "It only takes thirty seconds".

I'd love to see an update where these small but significant workflow issues are addressed. Just because one person doesn't care doesn't mean there aren't one hundred who do.

    Hi Beepster...

Yeah, that's probably how I am going to have to approach this. Thing is I would normally use the FX Bin for this particular type of track. It's a whole pile of (dry/DI) guitar tracks that need a sim so I'm going to have to create a unique FX Chain module for this.

Probably something I should do for guitar anyway. I've got some ideas on using various configurations of Sonitus EQ (to reject uneeded freqs before and/or after the sim) and the Sonitus Compressor to smooth out/limit the dry track a bit before it hits the sim (which may or may not do anything useful). All still very experimental so I'll be tweaking and messing with the order and settings of the effects.

So based on your comment it IS indeed possible to a) select multiple tracks and b) load a specific preset into all of them? That would work and I could keep doing that as I tweak.

There may also be an extra unintended benefit by using the Sim in an FX Chain. I could put it at the very top of the PC signal chain which I think would be a lot more similar to how a mic'd amp would hit a hardware console. Also using the Sonitus Comps and EQs right in the FX Chain to do the initial smoothing/band rejection means I can just use the PC stuff more like a normal hardware board chain (sweetening the "amp" a little and nudging it into the mix instead of doing all the heavy duty crap in the Quad Curve and PC Compressors).

I'll be trying some of this today.

    Thanks.

Hi, Craig. Yeah, PilotGav is right... that's not really the point. I was more checking to see if I was missing something. If it's not possible then it's not possible so I gotta figure something else out. It is a little odd (and a bit of a disappointment) seeing as how we have all sorts of other Multi Track/Quick Group type options. Just seems logical that you'd be able to do a quick group and drop something in or copy on einstance across other tracks en masse. The revamped the FX Bin a bit too so seems like something that they might have thought of adding.

Anyway... if you saw what I was doing you would understand why just mindlessly dragging the same thing into each track over and over again is not a simple as all that.

Basically it's not just 24 tracks. It's a bunch of tracks all kind of subdivided into various parts so I'm going to have do stuff like copy an instance to 4 tracks and another slightly different instance to 10 tracks and another to 6 tracks and so on. It gets a little hairy to keep track of all that and I'd be doing it over and over and over again as changes are made (because I can't just link the plugins to each other so they stay in sync). I'll just be starting with the same preset to begin with then dorking around like that.

Also I may not want to totally replace an instance. I might want to a/b an older preset against a newer one or indeed just replace it. So that's more fiddle faddle having to be done one by one and trying to keep track of what's what.

Just being able to select and insert or copy makes it a little cleaner of a workflow because I can  look at what tracks need the new instance once and just drop them. Without that I have to double check each time it's being dragged into the right track, I have engage the key bindings if needed, I have to make sure it lands in the right position, I have to fiddle with track height (if I'm doing this in Track View) or console size/modules in Console View (which is a lot of scrolling around horz and vert and scanning down to the track name because the FX Bin is quite a ways away from the track name).

Just trying to explain why this is something I could really use and why it's not quite as simple as just copy dragging things once and forgetting it. It's a lot fiddling around and double checking stuff which really is a bit of a time waster (and unfortunately a bit annoying).

I've been doing it your way for years now but I've never had a track count this high (I am already at 54 tracks and I haven't even added the drums and all the crazy synth/sampler parts).

    Anyhoo... that's my story.

    Cheers.

Yeah, this one kind of gets in my way too. It would be VERY nice if I could just select a bunch of tracks and drag them into a folder all at once. Seems I have to do it one at a time. Same with just trying to reposition pairs or groups of tracks. Just doesn't happen.

I'd also kind of like to be able to right click on a folder and get an "Insert Multiple Tracks" dialog like in the Global menus... and actually have those tracks appear in the folder.

Just little things like that would seriously speed things up for me.

Don't get me wrong... Sonar's workflow in general is great for me which is why I like it. I just find it odd that these seemingly simple and logical little things haven't been implemented when so much focus has been put on some of the crazier/more intricate stuff.

Meh... I get by. That's why I come here and post these questions. If something isn't possible I usually get a few ideas of how to deal with it and hopefully the Bakers get a glance and consider doing something about it.

Platinum introduced a whole bunch of simple things I had been asking for so hey... maybe things like this will come down the pipe too.

    Cheers.

For certain things I definitely do that but since I am dealing with guitar sims they kind of have to be able to respond to that specific guitar signal on a case by case basis otherwise I fear it will just turn into a mess. Kind of like those amps that allow you to plug two guitars in at the same time (I own one of those). Sure you can kind of hear both guitars but they always seem to be fighting each other and the electronics end up processing things weird.

I also like to save the busses more for polishing and glueing... especially for multitracked guitars which can get kind of hairy. I'm sure you know what I mean.

    Thanks though.

I provided some extra detail in my reply to Craig if you're curious but the short version is, yeah it would make initial set up grunt work easier but during the mix (which of course is creative) if I need to tweak something on multiple tracks (like let's say I want to dial back or increase the distortion on all the rhythm guitar tracks from inside the sim) then being able to just tweak one, copy it, select all the other rhythm tracks then insert the new version all at once makes things easier.

Of course being able to actually LINK all those instances would be much better (so I turn down the distortion on one and they all respond) but that is a much more elaborate/pie in the sky type of feature request.

One thing I am going to try today is hopefully create control groups across tracks on the FX Chain modules I put the sims into. So in the "turn the distortion up/down" scenario I just need to make sure beforehand that I map out the drive/dist parameter inside the sim to one of the FX Chains knobs (which of course I have to manually create) then create a control group across the tracks so all those knobs move at once (and thus change the parameter in the actual sim inside the chain).

That takes a lot thinking and planning ahead of time so it will be a bit of a workout for my little Beepster pea noodle... but that is the entire purpose of this specific project. It is huge, complex and I am going to attempt about a million and one things that I've been reading about, pontificating and generally trying to understand for the past three years. This project is going to be like a self imposed exam on how well I can actually do this stuff under real conditions with a real project (not one of my weirdo half arsed test projects).

    ;-)

    Cheers.

Yeah, scook beat ya to it. Great tip. I should have known that one.

Still would be nice to just insert them into the folder in the first place.

I usually create my folders first then insert the tracks. I can't seem to insert the tracks directly into the folder which is weird because I could have sworn that was possible.

    @scook...

Okay... that has not been working for me for whatever reason. The new track appears outside the folder BUT it may be some hotspot or dependent on how the project is set up? Or of course I could be crazy.

Doesn't matter the graphic is helpful and I'll give that a whack using that exact sequence to see what's up and whatever works will end up in my workflow.

However that's one track at a time. The only place I've seen the "Insert Multiple Tracks" option is in the Global "Insert" menu. If I could marry what you are showing in your helpful gif with "Insert Multiple Tracks" then that would be another irk slain.

Example would be what I had to do yesterday which was insert 4 rhythm guit tracks, 4 vocal tracks, 14 backup vocal tracks, about a dozen lead guitar tracks, various "extra" tracks, etc... that all needed to be in their own folders (subdivided by the list I just wrote).

If that capability exists then you would be the guy to know (and seriously dude... if you are going out of your way to test this stuff I really don't want to waste your time but if you do know that would be awesome info).

If it doesn't I can of course work as usual. Not really a whinge but trying to learn and/or maybe give a nudge to development to think about this stuff now that the program is stable and trucking along at a good monthly pace.

I will be giving some of these things a good poke around today. As I said I'm pushing the limits with this project to round out my knowledge and test my skills.

    Thanks.

Edit: I seem to recall there may have been a recent "fix" where tracks were not being inserted into folders using the method you are showing under certain conditions. I am still on Dorchester so that could be what I am experiencing. Not sure if that was a regression thing or if it's just a recent improvement or if I compeltely imagined the whole thing. Just remember that being mentioned somewhere in a thread or eZine or something.

Yeah I get exactly what you mean Beep and 1) I don't think it's possible and 2) it would be extremely useful.

Yes, one track a time when inserting into a folder. I suspect a lot of repetition could be cut down with a few track templates or a over-populated project template. Sometimes it is easier to delete unwanted tracks/folders than build fresh each time.

I was someone loathe to mention it because there is so much going on in this thread already but one thing that would be really awesome for the "Insert Multiple Synths" into a folder thing would be... and look at scook's helpful graphic to see what I mean...

In those little boxes where it shows the Audio and MIDI track count if you could click on those and get a dialog or something or it turns into an entry box where you could add X number of Audio or MIDI tracks. It almost seems like that might have been the intent at one point but maybe coding it would have been a logistical pain in the balls (especially in the chaos of the initial X series/Skylight release).

But yeah... how awesome would it be just to be able to toss in some extra blank tracks by entering a number into those fields? Would take some thinkin' and doin' but it would be convenient.

    Cheers.

I should get on with it. Thanks for entertaining my spazzwadiness, guys. This has been a very fruitful thread.

Indeed. My problem with templates at this point is I never quite know where my projects are heading. Once I settle into a groove (like once I start putting together albums or just get ideas for a specific style of writing) then I'll employ templates. Right now I'm still really just trying to figure out WTF I'm trying to do with all this in the long run.

I would definitely never anticipate a project like this because it's actually someone else's massive creation that I'm rebuilding from the ground up... which they have graciously allowed me to do. Very educational and why I'm here asking questions again.
