What are inserts and sends used for?

    But, what you may find a very useful application of a send is the concept of sidechaining. 
    Below is a link with a details, but basically you're using the output from one channel to drive an effect on another channel.  So if you have a compressor on a bass channel, then you can put a send on a drum kick channel and direct that send into the side-chain of the compressor so that every time the drum kicks, a copy of the kick sound is sent to the compressor to pull down the bass guitar a bit.

    Insert Fx are usually those plugins that affect the whole of the signal in some way, like compression, gating etc.

    Sends are useful when you want to share an Fx plug among several other tracks, like reverb, delay etc.

    Rather than wasting resources and having a separate reverb plug on every track, you insert it on a bus and use the sends on your source tracks and point it to the reverb bus.
