Install Error: Unable to register Dll/OCX

Hi, trying to install on a new laptop.  Win 7 64bit.  Installing 32bit Sonar x1.  I keep getting the error above referencing nullproxy.dll.  Any ideas... Tried running the installer as administrator.  No luck.

Thanks,
John

Are you running the setup by rt-clicking on it and "Run As Administrator"?

If that does not work...

In Windows 7 have you turned off User Access Control off?

If not

Control Panel
    User Accounts
        Change User Access Control Settings

I think...

Hope This Helps

What Meh said....    UAC can prevent entries from being written to the LOCAL_MACHINE area of the Windows registry.  You'll have to reboot after changing UAC, but can usually turn it back on (if needed) after installation is complete.

If you do have the DLL in place, you could also try manually registering it using a command prompt with admin rights.

Re:Install Error: Unable to register Dll/OCX 2012/04/15 14:07:53 (permalink)
nullproxy.dll is not an ActiveX library. It does not require registration.

For some reason the installer thinks it does, is trying to register it anyway. The registration fails because the DLL does not have an OleSelfRegister entrypoint, meaning the DLL does not know how to register itself and does not need to anyway.

If your installer allows you to ignore the error and proceed, do so. There will be no subsequent problems as a result.

Thanks all for the info.  Bit I ignored the error as you suggested even though the installer said to roll back and it seems to be ok.   Thanks again for all the help.

Resurrecting a three year old thread?

It has generally been accepted that registration problems in Sonar installs are cured by making sure that widows update has completed and a reboot after the update has applied the fixes.  This should be a pre-installation requirement in the Sonar installer.

Yes, resurrecting it.
Regardless what it is generally accepted, Sonar won't install.
My windows is up to date with the latest patch, and I have installed many other products which all worked as a charm, except Sonar.
Am I the only one with this problem, or it is also generally accepted that Cakewalk installation programs are less robust than average? Because if it is only me then I will re-adjust my judgment on the quality of the product, which I purchased but I can't use, and for which of all the hours spent since its purchase, none when towards the commitments I have, and all went to troublshoot regsvr32, visual c++ library and what not.

And then, someone tells me it is generally accepted is my fault, basically.

On a more helpful note, instead, let me add that I just found out that the 32bit version installs properly.
So now it remains to be understood what is making the 64bit version fails to register the dll's.

If I run regsvr32 manually, on any of the DLL for which I receive the pop up error from the Sonar installer, I get an error saying that the DLL doesn't seem to be compatible and that I should check that the DLL is indeed for 32 bit if it was supposed to be for the 32bit version or regsvr32, or 64 bit if it was run with the 64bit version of regsvr32.
I am running the 64 bit, because i am running from its location C:\Windows\System32\Regsvr32, which is the 64bit.

Any one any clue, it will be truly appreciated.

Cheers,
/Flavio

It is your fault.  That you had to resurrect a three year old thread should indicate that this is not a common problem, and yes, I'm saying that there is something dodgey with your system or you would not be experiencing this issue.  You need to readjust your judgment.

Now, how about providing some information that might allow the folks here to help you to get to your configuration issues.  What computer (motherboard, cpu memory), OS version (are you installing on a supported OS), and version of Sonar are you trying to install that isn't working?

Flavio, can you list some of the specific DLLs that won't register? And the error codes regsvr32 returns when it fails?

There aren't that many files left in SONAR anymore that require registration (AFAIK just older DX instruments such as TTS-1 and Pentagon).

Hi Bitflipper,

thanks for your reply.
Here is the list:

on ..\Sonar Professional:
Stretch.ax

on ..\ Shared Plugins:
DeWire.dll
SonitusFXCompressor.dll
SonitusFXSUrroundCOmpressor.dll
SonitusFXDelay.dll
SonitusFXEqualizer.dll
SonitusFXGate.dll
SonitusFXModulator.dll
SonitusFXMultiband.dll
SOnitusFXPhase.dll
SonitusFXReverb.dll
SonitusFXSurround.dll
SonitusFXWahwah.dll

on ..\Shared Midi Plugins
Arpeggiator.dll
ChordAnalyzer.dll
EchoDelay.dll
EventFilter.dll
Quantize.dll
Transpose.dll
Velocity.dll

on ..\Shared DXi\<various>:
GroovePlayer.dll

on ..\Shared Utilities:
CW120Auto.dll
NullProxy.dll

on ..\Shared Surface
MakieControl.dll

after this sequences, i get the following error:
PluginManager.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). CLick ok to close the application.

and then another identical from EndcoderConfig.exe - Application Error

after those two final errors, the installation is complete. But launching the application would result in the following error:
SONARPRO.exe - Application Error
The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b). Click ok to close the application.

==> I succesfully installed the 32bit version though, so it must be something related to the way the 64 version of regsrv32.exe is registering the dll.

Note: I also tried with safe-boot set on minimal. Same results.
I tried also to follow the suggestions related to the Visual C++ libraries.

When I try to run regsvr.32 myself, for any of the dll listed above, I get the following message:
RegSvr32
The module SonitusFXReverb.dll may not compatible with the version of Windows that you're running. Check if the module is compativle with an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of regsvr32.

Few last notes:
* I did everything as administrator and running as administrator
* I have Windows 8.1 64-bit, with several other applications built for 64 successfully registered.

Thank you again for ANY clue, hint, or help that could lead me to the right troubleshooting direction!

Cheers,
/Flavio

This thread is about X1. I may have missed it but I didn't see Platinum mentioned anywhere. So no CCC. Was X1 ever advertised as compatible with Win 8.1?

Flavio mentioned Professional in his post. Are the DLLs listed from the installation itself or files that were copied/pasted from previous versions?

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

No, it's not X1. I am installing the latest: Sonar Professional. I thought it is the same problem, different version, and thought this thread to be relevant.
I can open another one for X3 though. I just thought I would have been pointed to this one.

Hi gcolbert,
Both actually. When I am in safe boot - minimal  I have to call the .exe file under Program Data/Cakewalk/Command Center/downloads, because the command center application won't run without internet.
Otherwise, in normal mode, I usually run it from the command center itself. It leads to the same behaviour.

Just to clarify, X3 is not Professional. It's kind of annoying but they haven't actually named the latest version. It's just "Sonar" now. Some people have gone with "2015". I admit it's pretty confusing. Sorry to hear you're having trouble. I'm on Win7 SP1 64-bit and didn't experience anything like this at all.

Re:Install Error: Unable to register Dll/OCX 2015/04/02 07:23:23 (permalink)
Thanks Sanderxpander.

I came to conclude that is must be something on my environment, combined with some sort of "fragility" on cakewalk installer.
I still don't know what can this be, but I think has to do with something Windows is supposed to do and it is not properly doing (therefore is not strictly a cakewalk problem), but that is a fatal show-stopper only for cakewalk.

But it's all good: at least I am working with the x86 version. My stubbornness will prevail and one day I am confident I will have the x64 too.

Thanks,
/Flavio

So when you run the executable (.exe) directly, are you right clicking on the file icon and selecting 'Run as Administrator?'  Something is preventing the installer from updating the registry.

This is either a permissions thing, or your registry is hosed.

Re:Install Error: Unable to register Dll/OCX 2015/04/03 09:11:24 (permalink)
yes, i right click and chose Run as Administrator.

I was reading that it could be related to the visual c++ library version... but i don't know. I tried to follow the recommended procedure to fix that, but didn't solve it for me. It's a puzzling problem because I know that other products successfully register their x64 dll, so there must be a way to have Sonar also doing that.

Maybe I should go in regedit and manually remove somethig related to my previous version of Sonar (Sonar X2)?

Did you see this entry about fixing the DLL/OCX issue in the Knowledgebase? Hopefully something there will be helpful.

That error is typically associated with missing VC++ runtimes, as here:

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17023419/win-7-64-bit-dll-problems

The problem, as it says there, is that there are multiple versions. They are standard Microsoft redistributables so it won't hurt to start with the VS 2015 version:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

and then 2013. Also see which of them, if any, show up in Programs&Features.
