Install Sonar X1 to an external USB hard drive?

Is this option possible?

If not, can X1 be installed on a separate physical drive other than the default C drive?

Thanks.

You could probably install it to USB, but that won't make it portable (if that's your intention)
and as long as it always maps to the same drive letter.
Don't know if would cause performance issues, such as causing a long load time - all depends on the USB device. I recently compared the performance of using a couple of USB thumbdrives against against 2.5" laptop harddrives mounted in USB external cases and the thumbdrives sucked - 2 to 4 times as long to transfer files over a gig in size.

    Edit:
I've been waiting for USB 3.x and its higher bandwidth to make a dent in the scene.

BTW - you should not have a problem installing X1 on the drive/directory of your choice.
I didn't change it this time, but over the years I've installed previous versions of Sonar on various drive letters and directories.

I've done it and it works. But I did a minimal install. The only VST installed was TTS-1
edit: It must be installed on/from the host computer though.

I hear that USb3.0 will be as fast or faster than firewire.  that true?

I've got a spare 8G USB flash drive here...

    Will X1 work with that?

I've read that X1 can do strange things to 8.5.3

    Don't want to risk that!

    That should be fine.

If you find that there are performance issues due to read/write speed of the flash drive then you might want to check getting a portable USB hard drive.
While a firewire drive might perform better, the USB models are very cheep right now.  For example, this weekend Fry's Electronics (in California) has on sale a 500GB for $49.99 or a 2TB for $89.99.  I think NewEgg.com is having a sale on portable hard drives this weekend as well.

If you really want to be safe you'd be better off using one of the many disc partitioning tools and create a new small partition to put X1 onto. Then your disc perfromance wont be effected. a USB 2 drive will be far too slow to run a program like SONAR on.

    +1

With my laptop I eventually replaced my harddisks with larger ones so I could do just what Mike suggested.  For around $60 you can get a 500GB 2.5"

Somehow I screwed up the link in my last message.

    I updated my drives with 500GB Seagate Momentus (7200RPM 16MB cache)  http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16822148374

Over all I've been real happy with these drives.  I've been replacing my drives with new models as they increase the capacity. I did run into one that clicked excessively and died but all the rest have been problem free (seems like all the brands have some percentage of funky drives).

    Anyway probably TMI...

I've heard different sources say yes and no.
Here's one review: USB 3.0 vs FireWire 3200
Even if it doesn't quite beat FireWire on all fronts, I think that once it becomes common place that USB3 devices will considerably cheaper than their FireWire counterparts.

With the problematic Firwire chip set issues that constantly crop up with DAWS I can see more and more manufacturers moving to USB. Once USB 3.0 is a lot more available I'd say they might finally drop firewire altogether. many companies that only had firewire interfaces are now all bringing out USB 2.0 versions that provide exactly the same performance as their Firewire counterparts.

Especially with laptops where its just so difficult to work out what combination of firewire onboard or express card will or won't work. there's no predictable chices to make and often no choice works properly. USB is far more robust.= and it seems like most developers have now got the knack of writing good or at least better USB drivers for their interfaces.

    Amen brother!

I gave firewire a try and went running back to PCI.
Lower latency, zero hiccups and it just works.

Firewire is nothing but a PITA.
Just take a look at where the majority of complaints come from.
    People using firewire interfaces.

The MAC people managed to get it somewhat correct, but under Windows it's a real crap shoot IMHO.

Yes it *can* work, but in general your chances are poor and when latency is considered you had better buy the right interface, with few internal buffers or you are screwed.
The Maudio FastTrack are pretty good IMHO and offer low round trip latency with honest numbers.

    USB is the future IMHO.

FWIW, if I recall correctly, there are a couple of benchmarks floating around the net with a Seagate USB 2.x drive which is upgradeable to USB3 and the general consensus is, don't bother upgrading.

Of course running a DAW is a different kettle of fish.

USB got a bad rep because of 1.x devices compared to firewire.
USB 2.x changed that in a big way and USB 3.x is just raising the bar again.

Firewire = never again for me.
