Install VST plugins in Program Files or Program files (x86)?
I am wondering where I should install my VST plugins. For exampel, I do have Basstation 1.6, wich I presume is 32 bits and would normally be installed in Program files (x86). However, as I do have Windows 7 x64 I wonder if I can install them in Program Files. And if they work of course;) I would like to keep all my vst plug.in in the same folder, seem a bit confsusing to have them on two different places... anyone knowes?

Well you should have things in their own little world I can quote Jim, resident long-haired PC guru on the structure Sonar's 32Bit VST plugins get installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\VstPlugins * Sonar's 64Bit VST plugins get installed to C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\VstPlugins * Third-party 32Bit VST plugins get installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\VstPlugins * Third-party 64Bit VST plugins get installed to C:\Program Files\VstPlugins That makes 4 as opposed to 1 but at least it's all organised.

I generally let them self install. I have found that many will install in their own folders (very important) in the cakewalk VST folder.... If they do not install there automatically..... then it is a simple process to move them manually..... cut and paste them into their own folder in the Cake VST folder. It is possible to leave them alone and simply add them to the plug in manager scan list..... but having them all in one easy to find place, properly indexed and installed in their own folder, makes changing them or removing them or whatever...so much easier when you don't have to look all over the place for them.

By creating your own VST paths (As shown above for third-party plugs) you only need to deal with 2 different locations -- default (for 64 bit) and x86 (32 bit). IOW, Cakewalk VST plugs will co-exist just fine with third party plugs in the same folder.

Yes absolutely. You can have two for ease. The structure is about what each individual wants. The best thing is to get it organised right from the off and then it's all familiar and makes installing new stuff a breeze instead of a search.

So are you saying you just copy and paste the dll into a designated folder and that's it ... or do you need to copy other things along with the dll? I'm thinking of things like help or config files or sounds or whatever. I like your approach if it works most of the time. I've found a lot of VST installers aren't very flexible or even accurately observe your directions as to the install location. So my current system is a mess in this regard. I hope to get it right on the next system ... but I need to learn just how to do so.

Personally, I don't keep my VSTs in Program Files, or on the same drive as my OS, for that matter. ew

I have on several occasions copied the DLL file into a folder I created and made sure it was included in the start up scan..... that will work. EW makes a good point..... if you have enough drives. Keep the OS in one drive... and use a second drive fro the music programs......I don't have that option on my lappy...... A new box is coming and I will have 4 drives in and one drive out. I like to keep my sample libraries in a separate drive...currently outside the box..... due more to space on the internal drive right now than anything else. my new box will have (hopefully) 4 working internal drives..... one will be for the OS and other non music programs and apps I might need..... one will hold the DAW and the other music programs.....a third will be a sample library, and the 4th will be storage. the external will be for project back up. This DAW will be off line. I will have a net connection simply for program updates and registration. All in and out will be by disk or USB virus scanned......

You don't have to use separate VST Plugin folders for Sonar and 3rd party plugins... but it allows separate control over each. This is useful if you're using more than one host DAW application. ie: You can expose the 3rd party plugins to all host applications... while keeping the Sonar specific plugins hidden from the other hosts.
