Installed X2a Patch. ugh
Cakewalk released X2a Patch. Looks like I've taken a slight audio performance hit. I'm starting to get more glitches in playback than before the patch. I'm probably on the upper average of number of plug-ins I'm using (approx. 100 plug-ins going for a session of 24 tracks, 10 busses, 8 sends, and about 3-4 plug-ins each), but X1 actually handled the sessions better. My system is a 64-Bit Windows 7 system, Intel Quad-Core (8 thread) proc, 8 gigs RAM, NVIDIA G-Force 1GiG RAM card, and Apogee Mini-DAC using S/PDIF optical. All plug-Ins are 64-Bit, since Bit-Bridging is so bad for me. Back to X1 again.

I changed the "Buffers in the Playback Queue" to a higher number (4), and this fixed the issue. However, the first time I did this, the session audio was first silent with only one track showing audio. Closing and re-opening the session corrected that. (bug?) So, before the patch, my number of playback buffers was set to 2 (default?) with less latency. After the patch, I had to increase the number of buffers, which added slight latency, a hot-button issue with me while recording overdubs.

brconfilct, did you do this? Neither SONAR X2a no the installer does not do this automatically. This can be done by launching SONAR and doing the following: Go to Edit > Preferences > File - VST Settings Click the [Reset All VST Plug-ins] button When prompted with the message "This will reset configuration settings for all your VST Plug-ins to defaults... Are you sure you want to do this" click [Yes] Click the [Scan VST Folders] button and wait for the scan to complete

I did. Didn't help. But I did have to increase the number of playback buffers, which fixed my issues after the patch. X1, nor pre X2a had this issue for me, not that this is immediately the culprit---just observation.

I've noticed the same - definitely lots of audio glitches with X2a while playing back an unchanged project that had none in X2. Also, playback annoyingly continues after hitting the spacebar and I hear some MIDI timing issues with my drum track.

I believe I am having performance issues also with X2a. Maybe it's because I'm still Win 7-64. It seems from these posts that Win 8 systems are skating smoothly. I just loaded up a project with many takes on various tracks--at least 100 takes--but almost all of them archived. With X2, I could still record two or three tracks simultaneously with no problems in that project. With X2a, after I stop the recording, the Now time takes 6 or 7 seconds to return to the Now Marker. It was easy to roll back to X2, so I loaded the same project, and there was no such delay. I'm thinking X2a has a harder time dealing with so many takes/tracks, even archived. It does fine with a new project and few tracks.

I am using Win7 64bit, 4GB RAM, DUO-core, NVidia GPU and I too am experiencing some weirdness wit X2a. (and yes I did the plug-in rescanning song and dance before attempting to use X2a) - Song loading - now takes much longer, rough guess about 4x. Even after project is saved to X2a format.
- Soloing - when I hit solo I get a light show. I can see all the controls elements (solo, record button, etc.) flash on & off on all the other tracks.
- Decreased headroom. Had to turn everything off, optimize performance settings, etc. just to work on an old project with less than 20 tracks. Didn't have to do any of that before.
- Could not load Boost11 on Master bus effect's bin - tried multiple times. Each time Sonar locked up and I had to kill the process and restart Sonar. Finally used something else.
- My Melodyne Editor tracks would occasional go out of sync - usually when recording.
Tweaked a vocal track to use as a reference for a singer and ended up having to delete it because even muted it kept playing back out of sync. Edit: After a reboot, and some settings tweaks. Running X2a in playback mode only. No problems today with solo. Headroom seems OK (but it seemed OK yesterday too, until I tried to record audio). Current issues/oddities... - long song loading times
- sometime Sonar hangs when loading a song
- Melodyne Editor tracks play back glitchy 1st time song is played, then seems pretty solid.
- The particular song I was working on yesterday still crashes if I try to insert Boost11 on Master Buss.
But on another not saved in 2xa project does not have this problem.

Man, that's a shame. All these complaints are making me very hesitant to install the patch. I've still got the first release of X2 running and although I've noticed some minor glitches it's been running fairly smoothly. I may just install the Quickfix and leave it at that until X2b. I'm assuming all this is because the focus got put on implementing the Win8/touchscreen stuff which I have no use for. I also see from the list of fixes that the one major issue I was having doesn't seem to have been addressed which is the crazy selection problem. Trying to select or highlight a single clip or section selects a bunch of other stuff making edits impossible. I've resorted to locking all tracks until I need to make an edit. So I guess... yeah I'll be a malcontent and hope the b patch is already getting worked on. PLEASE focus on stuff that affects us 7 users. kthxbye

I highly recommend a rollback point. Also, I really don't like calling support--wasn't a very good experience in the past, but Webex could be useful. Sidenote: Using ASIO Driver Mode doesn't recognize my MOTU 24 i/o even though the MOTU supports ASIO.

Its likely to be a configuration issue. Thanks for chiming in, Noel. Not sure whom you were responding to, but you seem to be addressing my issues as well. It's very possible you are right, but I've checked all my configurations--I actually write them all down--and they're the same for X2 and X2a. I have an unsubstantiated suspicion that the update optimized things for Win 8, but introduced performance issues for Win 7. Again, that is pure speculation on my part. I could be totally wrong, but hope others with Win 7 64 will report their experiences. Not sure when to call support over the holidays, but I have to keep working every day including Christmas, so I've rolled back to X2.

It's not too hard to uninstall and reinstall. I did that just to keep things clean (making sure to delete the registry keys for X2). The whole process took me about an hour and a half, with hardly sitting in front the computer. If you already have the installation files for X2 on your hard drive, it's a cakewalk.

Maybe Cakewalk could offer patches much like Microsoft does Service Packs, as separate installs at least until Cakewalk gets better at catching some of these issues before releasing new code. Or, possibly separate Windows 7 and Windows 8 versions somehow. The latter I highly recommend. I agree with Saxon1066 that introducing Windows8 features may be causing more trouble for Windows7 users. I sustain Saxon's comment that this is pure speculation, but the Windows8 enhancements DO seem to be the defining attribute here. 80% or more of the bug fixes seem pretty obscure, and many others reported in the forums went untouched or not replicated. One thing I'm having issues with today regarding X2a is while trying to tweak a guitar part using the Looping function (next to the NowTime window in the Control Bar) and setting the loop points is, Sonar X2a seems to have serous issues getting all the audio to correctly play in the first 5 seconds or so, and it's not reporting drop-outs. If the guitar part I'm tweaking is less than 10 seconds, I'm now having to set my loop start point well before the actual guitar part plays so that the overall mix is playing fully before the guitar part comes in. This reminds me of the days of sync'ing ADAT playback, when one ADAT machine might delay playback by a second or two while it's synchronizing to the Master ADAT machine.

For me it took a couple tries to get X2a installed. I too have found my system slowed and long load times are now the norm. I find this strange because after the initial X1 debacle I had everything working well and smooth under expanded, and then X2. I'm thinking it's got to be my specific system. Maybe my i7 is too old, maybe my ram is out of date, I don't know. What I do know is that I'm not buying another system to make X2a work better. I'll roll back to X2 or go in another direction. Next year we get X3.

I've had loads of problem with this upgrade. Some important Vst's and Vsti's could no longer be found by Sonar no matter how many times I reset or reinstall the vst's/vsti's. a good example: cannot find Trillian in Sonar although the DLL file is still in my vst folder. My work around is to use Omnispere to load my bass patches. If I did not have omnisphere, This wouldn't have been funny. I have done a roll back and followed the intructions to a T just in case I missed anything. I have even uninstalled sonar removed every cakewalk related software from my system and registery and reinstalled everything with no joy. I have had to revert to using dim pro 32bits in my 64bit rig due to dim pro 64 constantly crashing sonar, and I am also noticing that my computer is strugling and crackling a lot with only a few Vst's and Vsti's loaded. The fact that many of us windows 7 users seem to be experiencing more problems now makes me also wonder if optimizing Sonar for Windows 8 has created some problems for us. Its likely to be a configuration issue. Thanks for the suggestion Noel, I set my X2a preferences the same as X1 wherever possible. Among the equivalent settings, the only differences were in Dithering and Panning Law. After doing so, playback of the problem project had no more X2a audio glitches and the space bar stopped play back on a dime. Out of curiosity, I tried to recreate the problem by setting the preferences back to their failing state but X2a no longer glitched with the old settings making me suspect the simple act of saving the preferences cleaned something up. No worries now, I'm happy with X2a.

I think that's a good possibility. I've seen similar results in other software as well, where the act of simply resaving the prefs/ini file can make a difference. How is the .ini file being resaved here? Just going to preferences, then config file, then hitting "apply"? Or was a slight change made?
