Instrument Definition Question
I just got a Korg Kronos 88 and, of all things, I can't find an instrument definition file (.ins) on any of the disks the manufacturer provides. This thing has zillions of sounds in it. Can I define the instrument and load all its info without an INS file? Doing it manually is not feasible.

You can use it but the INS file allows you to see the patch names in the patch drop down box. Without that it'll just appear as numbers. Is there nothing close that has an ins file you can then edit to save time?

Possibly. The instrument came with three disks and four owner's manuals. The manuals are also in PDF format and I might be able to do some copy and paste. Isn't the INS file just a text file?

Yes I believe it can be edited in a text editor but I'm not sure of the layout protocol. Should be easy enough to have a look at an existing definition and work out what needs to be where. I've always done my editing via the ins file definition panel within Sonar which is easy enough. Look on the bright side, you've only got to do it once.

And when you are done you can write a paper "Architecture of INS Files with Examples" that we would all enjoy. If you are a programmer, how about writing an "INS File Blizzard" that would examine your synth and construct the INS file. Panu, Ben????

Got my Kronos 73 several weeks ago and created an INS file for the 14 program banks using the PDF voice name list and MS Word. It's a little time consuming, but as the previous poster commented, you only have to do it once. BTW, the old Insmaker utility which worked with the Tritons will not work with the Kronos. There is no INS file for Sonar supplied with the Kronos.

FBB depends on how many sounds / banks it is.. it can be a nightmare if it's loads 1000+ (e.g. a sound module) . [new paragraph] If you can ask korg to to provide you with the patch list (with bank numbers) as text, then it would speed up things. It's PAGES of patches, I just looked

Coincidentally I've just been updating the Sonic Cell INS file which doesn't already contain performance patches and I did that using a text editor. A PDF version of the manual and cut 'n' paste will save lots of time and typing here, that's how I did it. The protocol for the file is easy enough to work out from an existing INS file.

use any number of upload sites, google "file upload" and you get a list.. and you get a link back in exchange, thats how I've uploaded PDF's / drum maps for others on here in the past.

The Kronos INS file can be downloaded here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/urynd8 I've loaded the User G bank with the EXs3 Brass/Woodwind programs. The file includes programs for all 14 banks. I did not, however, bother with all the extra GM banks nor did I include all the drum mappings (would have taken forever). Since I included the category in the INS file, Sonar can find patches by name and/or by category. Hope this helps.

drum mapping does take ages.. If they implemented it as input text file + from sfz then it'd be far quicker.. :)

Hi, Any chance you could re-post that download....I just tried and it has expired. I just bought a Kronos, and this INS file will be terrific for re-programming tracks... Thanks

FWIW, I did not immediately find a live link to an .INS file, but I found this utility that "takes a PCG from the Kronos and generates an Instrument File for Sonar": http://www.synthify.com/Kronos_SW_dev/
SONAR Platinum x64, 2x MOTU 2408/PCIe-424 (24-bit, 48kHz) Win10, I7-6700K @ 4.0GHz, 24GB DDR4, 2TB HDD, 32GB SSD Cache, GeForce GTX 750Ti, 2x 24" 16:10 IPS Monitors
