Intel I7 test report
The local PC guys built me an I7 3770 with 16 gigs of really fast ram. Quiet, only cost me $900. So, I thought I'd try to stretch it out (sonar producer x1d). First, as others have reported, the CPU does show up as 8 cores on the performance meter. 2nd, I loaded 12 instances of NI massive (a known CPU hog), 5 instances of Reaktor, 1 instance each of Toxic biohazard, dimension pro and absynth (20 softsynths): put some copies of midi junk on all channels, different patches for each. The CPU meters are bouncing all over the place, but they appear to be nowhere near topping out. No stuttering or hiccups. Phew, last Daw I'll ever need.

Geoffrey Phew, last Daw I'll ever need. That's how I feel about my i72600/16GB but those bast%^d software companies will surely come up with something I have to have that kicks the i7's a$#.

Only 8Gigs here, but i72600 is great. It's been a whole different experience with Sonar, and anything else, since getting this HP. I've been doing some pretty complex projects, and tracking with loads of VSTs, and not seem to have bothered it at all. I can't remember the last time I had to freeze a track.

I built my own i7 and after some tweaks all seems good. No regrets. Some people seem to think they need those ridiculous $900+ Intels to run X1 and I think it's just silly. 16GB Corsair here and Caviar Black drives so I'm sure that doesn't hurt either. SSDs are too expensive (and seem to still have a high failure rate) for my tastes and budget at this point though so I passed on that. Not a tech but I spent a year researching to find the right solution. Seems my research was not a waste.

I just built a new PC (its been up about 2 weeks). I built "overkill" but later on I'll probably be glad I have the extra capacity. Most of my specs are in my signature. All 8 "cores" work according to the CPU meter gadget I used to have (deleted all sidebar gadgets per Microsoft and other security bulletins). I have the OS and my recording software (Sonar, Melodyne, Ozone 5, etc) on the SSD. Everything else is on a 1TB hard drive.

Beepster SSDs are too expensive (and seem to still have a high failure rate) Yeah... I must admit that I'm a bit worried about my two SSDs, but I'm loving them at the moment. I can have a twelve track audio project running and the disk meter does not even go past 1% activity. I just have to remember to back up regularly. As for my i7... I went for the one down from the most expensive when I spec'd my laptop, in the hope that it will last me a good few years yet. My last workstation, that I built myself, soon run out of steam when I upgraded from Sonar 5SE to 6PE. May yet be a folly, but so far so good. My boot time is currently just under thirty seconds...

let me throw a curve ball into this,i built an AMD phenom 2-6 core with 8 gigs of ram and ive yet to come close to toping out with this bad boy. i probably paid less then half of what you guys did, around 450.00. has anyone seen the benchmark test cross referencing these two? they are very close, whats even closer is the AMD bulldozer which is the 8 core. thats close to even in almost every catagory. AMD isnt what it use to be,theyve come along way. i remember the days when someone would mention the wordAMD and the first thing that came to mind was "TOY". not ant more.

I'm still looking for the time to assemble the PC in my signature, I bought those components 2 weeks ago. Man am I itching to make it happen. But no studio space - living with our adult kids. We have one room, everything we own is in storage onsite(building site next door) in our 6 x 9 metre shed but no room to move. Builder still hasn't started construction yet; but soon. I hear you guys talking about these screaming machines and I want me one. even if I build it I'd be kidding myself if I could get enough gear together to run it satisfactorily. BUT wow will it be fun when it happens. Maybe next week the builder will start and so will I.

I have to admit it's only been a year for me[computers total] but this i7 2600k @ 4.6 with stock voltages and a 30 dollar cpu cooler, are amazing for the money. I got a bit dimmed when SB-E came out just after I built mine, but I certainly do not need more power, and have to wonder what Haswell is going to be all about,Q4 2013?[not sure about that release estimate] Anyhow,it certainly is a good time for using Daw's like X1. My little second generation i3 is also doing a fine job for me. I haven't had any problems with the recordings I have made. It's quite surprising but it's handling everything I throw at it with no problem. I thought I'd have problems because it's a cheapo computer, but no, it's been running great !! I am running 8 gigs of ram, but even still it's only an i3 !!

I am running 8 gigs of ram, but even still it's only an i3 !! Hey,thats because there was a massive step up,from 1st gen to 2nd gen, whereas Ivy Bridge[remember usual cpu benchmarks don't count for much for pro audio]is apparently no better than Sandy Bridge[for audio!],also the 1155 socket has now topped out with Ivy. Socket 2011 however, will be continue to be upgraded for a while to come, plus it has quad channel RAM,where 1155/sandy/ivy is dual channel, but like I said my box isn't close to having a bottle neck or not enough power, and after losing "core parking",all 8 threads/cores in X1's meter are amazingly even now[and low!] Lately Iv'e been using my i7 dell laptop more and more,as now I know more about optimizing it,and even with 6 instances of Guitar Rig,plus 2 more of Amplitube,Perfect Space, and Steven Slate Drums, all running[nothing bounced or frozen] it pushes it,but I have a sneaking suspicion, that Perfect Space, having to use the Bit Bridge, due to it being 32bit,is what gets it close. Whenever I use a 64bit reverb[but not convolution]the meters drop, even with all the other's,and Amp Sims are supposedly real cpu drainers. Bob
