All I can say after reading that is "Oh, no!"

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Really poor leadership in my opinion. Auto-tuning mechanisms on a $2,400 guitar? Seriously? How about a set of Spretzels and give a free tuner and call it a day.

I think this company lost it's way. They could have focused on being a premier - and less available - brand. Instead they thought they could chase the casual hobbyist with a $2,400 guitar.

I have a couple of Gibsons and like them. Well, I LOVE my 335 and like a lot by Gibson Les Paul. However, I casually shopped for a Les Paul for a few years before I found the one that spoke to me; they were all so different from a company that mass produces...

I have seen at many different places around the net, people refer to Gibson as the place where products go to die

Studio One 4 Professional, REAPER, CbB-(Couldnb't be Bothered)

Wow. I can't imagine a world without the Gibson guitar company... If they go bust, what happens to Cakewalk? I know my Gibson guitar (and perhaps my Tobias) will increase in value! :p

Just because a company might default on their loans (or even if they do) does not mean they will shutter the place.  And a lot can happen in a year.

Hopefully things will be ok and if not another company will buy cakewalk. I think cakewalk has gotten better recently, but Gibson seems to have gotten worse these last few years. Too many missteps with their guitars.

I'm blown away that they are paying such high interest in today's market:

You can check this out yourself in the FINRA database. The basics here are:
  • Gibson Brands has taken $375 million from investors.
  • The coupon to investors is 8.875%, already high-yield (junk) territory that assumes a risk default.
  • They offered the debt around August 1, 2013, and it matures after five years of paying the coupon, meaning they owe their investors back the principal.
  • Both Moody’s and Standard & Poors have downgraded the ratings on this debt very recently.
  • The secondary bond market has been FREAKING OUT, dumping these bonds on speculators for cheap. That spike of yield this summer means that original investors were selling their bonds to secondary investors for half of what they paid. If they gave Gibson $100, they sold those bonds to another guy for $50, meaning they were afraid to lose even more of it if they waited until August 1, 2018.
  • This means that investors roughly estimate that there’s a one-in-four chance that either Gibson won’t make all its coupon payments or return all the money it owes, a.k.a. default.

I think it is important to be mindful of our hosts here...I mean, how would you like it if friends you invite into your home start talking about your job security etc. ?
Sonar is a great product, Cakewalk has been more than fair, certainly by by no small measure (imho), ahead of some of the horror stories we have heard at the hands of at least a few of the competitors - if anything, this would be a time to rally around the brand with our moral support at the very least.

Not at all! I have complete confidence in all the various companies, even if I wonder where Gibson is going at times.
Cakewalk? I have no doubt that their "star" will continue to shine brighter and brighter.
RE CW folks? I wish them all the best, because the happier they are, the more exciting SPLAT etc et al, gets.

Cakewalk has done nothing but get better the last few years IMHO. But I don't think the fact that Gibson owns Cakewalk means we can't discuss Gibson honestly. I'm not worried about the survivability of Cakewalk - I think they'll do great no matter what the future holds for Gibson...

Re: Interesting News 2017/08/25 15:03:07 (permalink)
I read the linked article, and it seems to be that the music industry in general is in financial trouble.

Steinway, Fender, and Guitar Center are all in debt up to their eyeballs.

Makes me think that their managements have not been steering their ships correctly.  Taking on debt as sales drop is not a formula for business success.

But a default will usually result in selling off parts of the business in a restructuring deal, not a shuttering of the entire business.  Especially if parts of it are actually still profitable.

Here's where I think Cakewalk has dropped the ball.  They
come out with this very kewl, very intuitive, new thing called
the ProChannel.  Then develop virtually nothing for it.  They gave
us the CA-2A, and few others, and some third party "bonuses",
but, for the most part, have completely missed a "money machine"
in developing PC Modules, that I'm sure the vast majority of users
would rather invest their money in than third party vst's...

JMO...YMMV

Cakewalk Sonar is a hot property.  I have no doubt if Gibson faces it's worst case scenario and closes up shop, they'll be at least a half a dozen companies looking to take over Cakewalk's flagship product.

Although I have been known to be wrong.....from time to time.

I think they were hoping for more third party support. Hard to say. It could also be that they felt was available covers the bases sufficiently and that anything else was redundant or not worth it since you can already add effects to pro channel chsin.

Yep.

As far as the Pro Channel goes, the argument for CW relying on third party support to make it worthwhile was made back when it came out and IIRC CW said that they were not depending on third parties to make it work. That they would support it.

And they have. Maybe not as much as some would think they should have, but I think PC has done what CW wanted: An easy way (with low CPU usage) to view and use popular/BnB FX in a trk.
