Interesting article - DIGITAL DRUGS
Digital drugs Digital drugs, more accurately called binaural beats, are sounds that are thought to be capable of changing brain wave patterns and inducing an altered state of consciousness similar to that achieved by taking recreational drugs. Binaural beats occur when two tones with slightly different [color=#000000 font="times new roman"]frequencies are played together. Without headphones, the slight difference in the two frequencies is perceived by the listener as a single tone that wavers slightly. With headphones, however, the two tones are isolated and the listener hears each frequency clearly in a different ear. As the brain processes the two tones, it must take into account the slight difference between the frequencies. To the listener, this difference is perceived as rhythmic beats inside the head. The brain processes rhythmic stimulus as electrical impulses. The goal of digital drugs is to purposely control the electrical impulses and encourage the listener's brain to synchronize its brain waves with the binaural beats. This synchronization, which is achieved by selecting binaural tones within a particular frequency level, is called Frequency Following Response (FFF) and is part of a concept called entrainment. Entrainment, the synchronization of one biological rhythm to another, is not a new concept. It forms the basis for many types of meditation and medical bio-feedback. Digital drugs are also known as sound healing, solfeggio frequency therapy and ear shots, although i-dosing seems to be the most popular buzzword right now. The letter "i" stands for Internet -- videos and music downloads with binaural beats can be found quite easily by searching the Internet. Learn more about i-dosing and test its effects.

'Messing with perception' Dr Brian Fligor, director of diagnostic audiology at the Boston Children's Hospital, thinks the idea of digital drugs is as far-fetched as the plot of a horror film. Related stories 'Legal high' NRG-1 drug is banned "To my knowledge there is no science that backs it up," Dr Fligor told the BBC. "They are experiencing an auditory perception." The sounds available at i-dosing websites are called binaural beats. When listened to on headphones, they present one sound to one ear and a subtly different sound to the other ear. Continue reading the main story “Start Quote I found it to be a somewhat amusing story” End Quote Dr Brian Fligor Director of diagnostic audiology at the Boston Children's Hospital But when heard together, the human brain hears something different from the original sounds. "It's just kind of messing with your perception of the sound," Dr Fligor says. "It's neat and interesting, but it has absolutely no effect on your perception of pleasure or anything else that was claimed." The teens, he says, may have been faking or may have been experiencing a placebo effect, unconsciously convincing themselves that they were indeed high. But doctors would find no real physical effects of this supposed intoxication, he says. I-dosing, Dr Fligor says, is "neither good nor bad. It's completely neutral. It's not the least bit harmful and so I found it to be a somewhat amusing story."

Sounds like a reprise of the banana-peel gag from the 60's. Interesting fact from the article: "Instruments are tuned to 140hz. This is known as 'concert pitch.'" Maybe that's been my problem all these years: not tuning to the proper frequency!

bitflipper Sounds like a reprise of the banana-peel gag from the 60's. What gag? I'm still high from the mellow yellow.

mike_mccue The Monks over in Tibet have been teaching this for centuries. And Brian Eno has been creating a lot of music for this for 35 years! And there are others, as well of course.

Guitarhacker Could this be the secret to New Age music...? New Age music was not anything but a fad ... it never existed. There is new age music every day being created, but ears don't seem to get out of town much ... Most New Age stuff was done by folks that weren't very good, but had all the equipment and sounded nice ... you and I can do that very easily, but we would not be "new age" because Linda Evans didn't say so!
