The digital vs physical debate is a different one than the single vs album, though.

I've been saying it for a long time - my preferred option would be 24 Bits .wav files. Over CD, over vinyl, or anything else.

I also dream of having an option to buy music as it sounds right off the stereo bus, before it gets screwed up at Mastering. Trent Reznor offered an audiophile master version of Nine Inch Nails latest album and I wish it's an idea that gets some momentum.

As of today, I still buy CDs and DVDs, but the physical support is nothing more than an annoying byproduct. I unpack the CD, rip it in iTunes, check out the sleeve a bit, realize I'm old and need my glasses, and then put it on a shelf in a closet, most likely never to touch it again unless I have to move it to a different storage space.

My stepdad has a ginormous collection of old jazz 78's from the 30's up to the 60's. There's probably close to 3000, many of them very rare. He inherited them from his father and they take up most of a room. Recently he was talking about who he would pass them onto when he died, and he found that nobody in his family wanted them - primarily because of the space they take up. Ain't nobody got that much room for music any more.

Finding someone to bequeath your record collection to will not be a problem in the future. The money you put into music downloads will vanish with the license to download them, in many cases probably long before you die.

If there is anybody that believes that dick then I imagine they think there was a dick just like him, before him, that said, "people are listening to music and not working hard enough" and he's the one that screwed everything up.

Lots of interesting comments on this "interesting" article. Obviously a pro musician is more likely to know the sales capabilities of albums but as a music buyer and listener if I hear something new that I like from a favourite group or artist then I almost always look for the album it is on and buy that instead of the single. What I listen to depends on my mood, whether I am driving, or doing something indoors and then I usually play albums (regularly these being those big old plastic LPs) through from start to end both sides. So my view is that albums are still very interesting and important
