Interface MOTU 2408 with new laptop

I have been running Cakewalk on a desktop computer for 10 yrs.
I recently bought a new laptop and and would like to interface it with the MOTU 2408 MKII.
How can I interface the new with the old?
The previous computer has a PCI-424 sound card and drivers.
The previous computer also used a non-firewire connection to the PCI-424.
The new laptop is stock. It has an Conexant Smart Audio 221 (I think..).
The new laptop has a mini fire wire input and USB inputs, of course. Can i just use an adapter with the mini firewire?
or,
do I need to purchase another dig. I/O?
thanks in advance
Ed

I have no idea wht the PCI-424 is or how you were using it with the MOTU.
you don't need the onboard soundcard (conexant) if you get the MOTU working and you shouldn't be using both because you'll get sync problems.

if the laptop has the 4 pin firewire, check your MOTU's manual. you can probably use it, but you'll need an external power supply. the 2 pins missing from the 4 pin firewire compared to the 6 pin is power.

The MOTU 424 is a sound card installed in the desktop computer.
I suppose my question is best answered by MOTU...
    I'll try there.
    thnx

ok - I looked up the MOTU PCI-424 and it looks like it is indeed a PCI device - I think you're wanting to try to use the firewire port on the external unit to connect to the laptop? that will not work. the firewire port on the external unit is used to connect other MOTU devices to that unit.

MOTU's website is pretty minimal and they want $20 to download the manual for the PCI-424 (yeah, RIGHT!), but I did see this in the FAQs:

Can I connect FireWire devices to the ports on my PCI-324/424 card?
Only MOTU PCI Audio interfaces may be used with the PCI-324/424 card

While we use a FireWire cable to connect MOTU PCI Audio hardware to the PCI-324/424 card, we use our own protocol for communication called AudioWire. You can only connect MOTU PCI Audio interfaces to your PCI-324/424 card; FireWire devices, including MOTU FireWire Audio interfaces, cannot be connected to a PCI-324/424 card.

so the answer is no, you cannot use the PCI-424 with your laptop at all. it must have the PCI card in the desktop computer to work.
