Interference
Hi Just set up Sonar X1 Producer on my brand new iMac using Bootcamp. All working beautifully except for some interference and scratchy noises coming from my monitors. Seems to have something to do, at least in part, with the mouse. When I click it or move it around or even just slide my finger over it there is a scratchy sort of noise. But the buzzing noise is there even when I am not touching the mouse. Any ideas anyone??? Thanks Mick

It could be a driver issue or it may be that your wi-fi is on. It's a pretty common symptom when something is competing with the mouse on the bus. I suggest that you edit you thread title to include "Mac", "Mouse" and "audible interference" or "noise" and someone who is familiar with your set up may be able to recognize your issue and provide a specific solution. Good Luck. best regards, mike

Besides what's already been stated, it could also be noise injected into your power supply from the VGA card. A lot of display adapters aren't filtered very well. Seeing that it's an iMac you won't be able to move around the internal power cables and integrated sound cards usually don't have the filtering required to reject this noise. If the Wi-Fi doesn't solve the problem it I'd recommend getting an external audio interface that has it's own power supply. Bus powered devices may still exhibit the behavior.

yeah, i get very low-level background noise from my pci card; if i want better i have to use the external (usb) card... if the mouse is wireless, try a wired one?

Hi Tried turning off the Wireless Network Adapter but it made no difference. I will try posting to a thread as suggested above. Any further ideas welcome. I guess in the end that interference won't end up on my final CD product but it would be nice to get rid of it. Mick

I have the same issue with my iMac. Mouse noise etc. through my monitors whether they are connected directly from the iMac or through my interface. I've unplugged everything, lifted grounds, moved the speakers, cables, plugs etc. no change. This is my 3rd set of monitors. I have not tried balanced cables yet though. Would that make a difference?

It appears my issue is the same and my wireless is disabled. I also tried turning off Bluetooth and connecting a hardwired mouse/keypad and it did not make any difference.

Are you using the built-in audio interface? My guess is "yes"... Get the A/D D/A out of the box (use an external audio interface)... and the issue will be gone.

It does not happen with headphones or on the internal speakers. It does happen whether I use a separate audio interface or run directly from the iMac. I've tried unplugging everything, lifting the grounds, and moving the speakers around etc. It will not stop, very annoying. This is the 3rd set of monitors I've had this with. (1st two, Samson Resolv's8, this set, Yamaha HS 50M) I did try an old (15year old Vestax) little 8W monitor pair and it did not happen with those--very interesting. I don't know what is different other than the new monitors are much higher powered. If someone could help me solve this I would be eternally grateful.

Impedance/level mismatch? Have you tried switching your interface line level output between -10 dBV and +4 dBu - I assume your newer powered monitors want +4 dBu.

It does not happen with headphones or on the internal speakers. If you use an external audio interface (monitoring via headphones), do you hear the noise? If not, I'd put my money on a grounding issue. Crap USB cables can also result in strange (digital hash) noises. I once had a noise issue that traced back to a Motif ES. The culprit was the USB cable connecting the Motif ES to the DAW. Swapped the USB cable for a higher quality cable... and the problem (noise) was gone.

You were right, it was a grounding problem after all!! It wasn't affecting headphones at all. After testing the 1st set of monitors, (which I believe something was messed up with) when I hooked up the next sets and heard similar noise, I only did two quick ground lifts, one from the wall and one on only one speaker without lifting BOTH speakers at the same time separately, which were on a y-cable. Geeze, lesson learned, how embarrassing. Thanks so much for the help! Peaceful speakers are a beautiful thing------
