Interstate Love Song (remix 7/21)

Thanks for the help I got on this so far. Had to track down a few failing 32 bit plugs and a few adjustments set me back to rebuilding busses. On the last mix, I was also trying to master to get the volume up. No mastering here so I'm uncertain if the level is comparative to a normal non mastered track. I've always admired this song because of it's chord structure and overall composition value. Going back and reviewing the original production, FX usage was a bit more than I remembered and a bit extreme to my ears so the original mix was not used as a reference. Sorry to anyone who got the brunt of my "Dynamics Spectrum Mapper" experiment on the last one. In the wrong hands, that thing is a sonic weapon.

On the right track now?

    Hi Grant,

It's good to see you've recovered this song.

It's been a few days since I heard the previous version, but from what I can remember, this is a better end result for sure. Still a bit bright, although I've not got the best ears here I'm afraid, especially for "proper" music. And I'm listening on my KNS-8400's, which may explain that.

    cheers

Thanks again Andy,  I'll have another look at the brightness. I tend to do that, equate high end for clarity.

Hi Grant nice to see you here again, have to agree the top sounds a bit thin and brittle, could do with a little more weight in the bottom end too.

    Thanks for sharing

I've always loved STP and this song in particular.  Your mix is very brittle and lacking any "meatiness".  The toms are especially loud and unbalanced.  Your volume level is OK for it not being mastered, and you have enough headroom to do it justice.  I look forward to hearing the remix of this song because I bet you will get it better.  This has enough potential to be a gem.

    All the best,

Hi Grant - how you doing mate?
Good performance on this one. I think the hi-hats/overheads need taming - it's making the overall mix seem harsh.
    Good stuff though

Sorry I missed your comments Lynn, thanks and new mix is up.

Edit: The earlier mixes that were quite brittle and thin have more to do with what I'm seeing, not what I'm hearing. I added more sizzle to my guitar and drum busses because seems like there's little to no activity above 7.0k when I mix to taste. I was restricting some low end that looked like they may be a problem in visualizer. The new mix here is more my ears than eyes but here is the visual data for this track.

New mix up. I had to delete Auto tune EFX because it was doing something to the stereo field. Much eq work done and a few gain staging problems overlooked on the 6/2 mix were corrected.

Edit: Oh and don't be alarmed, I used a limiter on this one but I endeavored to give it very little to do.

    Hi Grant,

Certainly not as brittle, at least not on my system anyway.

When you switch from hi-hat to ride at around 1:11 the ride is almost swamped I think. Might be the guitar to the left, I'm not sure. On a second and third listen is doesn't sound too bad. I would wait for the opinion of someone with a better set of ears before doing anything...

    cheers

    Hi Grant ol' buddy!!

Very nice work on this STP tune (one of my favs.). The mix sounds good/balanced/clean and really comes alive during the chorus parts.

Not sure if it's Soundcloud or it's in the tracks themselves, but I noticed some vocal artifacts (overdub sounds) around the 50 - 55 & 2:06 sec mark that stood out a bit on my H-Phones. Other than these minor blemishes, I really liked this and you did a good job on it.

It looks as if the others have pretty much nailed the mix down...but to me it actually seems a bit the opposite of crisp, allmost seems lacking in detail in the mids..missing some sheen. Maybe you made some adjustments? Mixes that need some kind of reciovery can be a real challenge, moreso I think than a typical mix...gottan hand it to you...nice job so far on it.

I'm not much help if others hear the opposite. I'm on phones and maybe this is some kind of an influence.

Updated mix 7/7  to fix vocal issue Mesh discovered.

Thanks for listening again Andy, I'm in agreement about the high hat during the verses. Not sure how I'm going to deal with it yet though. I like the rest of the kit and even the HH in the other parts. I'm going to try to automate velocity or replace the HH in that section. Thanks again brother.

Thanks brother Mesh, several attempts to slip edit some breathy parts on that part, I restored that part from a back-up on the updated mix.

Big thanks brother Tim. I have some pretty steep curves on my filters that might account. for some of that missing sheen, I'll have another listen to the mids too. Thanks again.

Low end sounds OK on my monitors with Arc 2 but in my car I'm still hearing resonating lows here and there. Might be a while before a new updated mix. I'm going to rerun my Arc assessment and I also plan to try the demo for the Sonarworks correction software. Big thanks guys

Thanks for the listen Tony, as far as mastering, only real results I'm looking for is to be able to play a CD in the car without going for the volume when the song changes. I do love this song too, and finding it a real good one to practice mixing. Awesome to see and hear you back Tony

Thanks Mark, the new mix the drums have changed a bit, Hope the kick is better now. As far as the low end, the new mix reflects some cuts that sounded resonating to me. I've done some EQ work to the mids, I may have more low end work. Thanks brother, so great to see and hear you back.

    Grant,

Great performance of a classic STP song...  The 7/11 mix sounds a bit over-compressed and doesn't have a lot of bottom end.   Sounds like a HPF is engaged or something?  Anyway, the performance sounds very good...

This is sounding a lot tidier now Grant and I'm pretty certain you've ironed out most of the little glitches now. Drums are sounding great my end

Just one thing, that I've only just noticed, I think the end fades out a bit quick, especially the cymbals. Might be worth checking that out, or getting a second opinion.

    Hiya Grant,

Listening to the latest mix again.

One problem I have with listening to songs that are updated is I don't have access to the previous mixes and so find it difficult to compare.

what I would say about this one though, from memory, this whole mix seems to have lost some of that energy compared to the other versions I remember listening to.

Having said that, if I had listened to this version first I would have said it sounded fine.

Might just be my addled memory playing tricks on me dood ...

On a second listen, now that I'm bedding into this new mix, I think I actually prefer it. Seems cleaner to me...

    cheers

Sounds like you might have a bit too much compression on the drums.  The kick seems to lack impact, and is all high end with no bottom.

Vocals are very nice, and instrument performances are pretty good too!

I'd maybe give a bit more "beef" to the rhythm guitar too if it were me.

    Anyway, nice work!
