Into the Wayback Machine, Sherman!

Sherman: Where are we off to today, Mr. Peabody?

Peabody: Well, my boy, sometimes, to see where we're headed, it helps to look back at from where we've come. So today we're going back to the final decade of the century past. Set the Wayback Machine to May 1998, Sherman!

Sherman: Gosh, Mr. Peabody, that Mr. Catena sure was a smart guy!

Peabody: Yes he was, Sherman. And we were all the better for it. But it was still confusing to know what busmastering driver to use, and so benchmarking sites were helpful.

Peabody: Now, set the dial ahead to August 1998.

Sherman: But what about DAWs, Mr. Peabody? Weren't computers really expensive to buy back then? And how could people know what computer was best for a DAW?

Peabody: Good questions, Sherman. Set the dial ahead to October 1998, we're going to re-visit the face that launched ten thousand DAWs...

Sherman: Wow, Mr. Peabody! Imagine that, people could build their very own high performance DAW at low cost.

Peabody: Yes, Sherman, it was a revolution. the democratization of the DAW. People everywhere started building DAWs. People even went into business supplying DAWs, and selling pre-tested overclockable CPUs for building RYO DAWs. It was truly the beginning of a new era for the DAW. But just as now, compatibility was never assured and it could still be challenging when problems were encountered. Set the dial ahead to June '99.

Sherman: I see what you mean, Mr. Peabody.

Peabody: Yes, Sherman, and to keep up with the technology, DAW software had to improve. Set the dial ahead to October '99.

Sherman: Very interesting. Did professionals really use those "RYO" DAWs too?

Peabody: Why yes they did, Sherman.

Sherman: Golly, Mr. Peabody, Music City! Aww, now I wish I'd remembered to bring along some M&Ms.

Peabody: No time for snacking now, Sherman, progress was marching on and so must we! Set the Wayback Machine to the turn of the century, May 2000, for an update.

Sherman: Holy smoke, Mr. Peabody! It was certainly complicated to know which parts were best to use for a DAW. Good thing there were people around willing to help point the way.

Peabody: Yes, Sherman, they were a real blessing to DAW builders, all those who continued to light the way. Now, for our last stop, set the dial ahead to September 2000.

Sherman: Wow, Mr. Peabody, what a trip!

Peabody: Yes, Sherman, and now we can see that the best is yet to come!

You'll be able to look back at this post in 15 years and think...why on earth did I post that?
