Sort of solves the problem of how do I manage 14,000+ patches for this synth, right?

Despite being a rather old this VST, (2002) it still sounds remarkable to this day. Thanks for this. Librarian will be handy. I have still got this installed on my current studio machine.

If you look around on line, there are a large number of free patches for it too and many of them sound great.

Here's a great compilation of 14,000 patches to try out!

Over 14.000 free patches for Synth1 - a free virtual instrument for both PC and Mac
http://veryrandomstreams.blogspot.com/2012/03/over-10000-free-patchessounds-for-free.html

There are over 14.000 presets/patches/sounds available for the excellent freeware virtual instrument Synth1, all downloadable in various ZIP files that you can put in a folder and then access without having to unpack them.

I just made life much easier for you by taking the 173 available free banks I know about, cleaning them up, and then putting them in a single ZIP file you can download.

Thanks so much abacab.  Blimey I thought I had some sounds but this is serious!  Love it.  Most of those patches sound killer as well.  Comparable to many recent synth purchases (some of them expensive) I have made in the last year or so.  It is such a great synth.  This conversation has got me thinking about it again.  So easy to forget what you actually have don't you think.  The librarian must work great in conjunction with these sounds too.

I learned that there is a way to set the colors on the GUI to customize it.  Here is my theme.  Under 'opt > Color Customize > (#RRGGBB) > Panel = #1d1f21; Text = #757c81.

Plus the panel size is adjustable in options, from 80% to 250%.  Way ahead of its time!!!

This just gets better by the minute.  Those settings are great.  I have put it out to 200% as well which makes it pretty nice on a decent sized screen.

How on earth did you figure out those settings for the Panel and Text? You must have done some experimenting.
The only thing with yours is because of the near black background setting, its slightly hard to see how many voices are being used, not that is a big thing though. Your colour scheme is very nice indeed.  Well done. And yes it is way ahead.

Another cool thing too is if you uncheck the Panel and Text boxes it all goes back to normal.

I have been auditioning some of those million presets and nearly everything I try sound amazing.  What a great instrument.

Big question now is have you got the librarian working nice.  And if so how did you do it.  What steps are necessary to make the librarian work in conjunction with all those presets.

Used a color picker (eye dropper tool) in a graphics program to lift some hex codes off a Sonar screen capture.  I may play around with a grab from a few other programs to see what else I can come up with.  If you don't have photoshop, you can grab the free 'paint.net'.  If you expand the color wheel box, it will show you the RGB codes for any color you can find in a picture.  Very useful editor!  https://www.dotpdn.com/downloads/pdn.html

Another cool thing too is if you uncheck the Panel and Text boxes it all goes back to normal.

That mustard color put me off this synth fpr a long time.  Didn't realize what I was missing!

There are many keepers in there, but it has always seemed impossible to find them or remember where they were.  This librarian promises to change all that and make the process easier for finding sounds by category or search, and tagging favorites!!!

Big question now is have you got the librarian working nice.  And if so how did you do it.  What steps are necessary to make the librarian work in conjunction with all those presets.

Download it from this page, and use the installer, as it will install any dependencies if needed.  I tried doing the standalone install, but got an error when the VST was scanned by the DAW.
https://neutrinosky.com/downloads/

You will need to install (or move) the 'Neutrino Sky' folder into the 'Synth1' folder in your VST path.  Launch your DAW (I tested with Studio One and it works) and let it scan the VST.  Make sure you already have Synth1 installed.  When you insert 'Synth1Librarian' as a VST instrument it functions as a wrapper for Synth1, so you will not need to insert the synth in addition to the librarian.  That is all taken care of.  On first run of the librarian, you will need to point the 'Library' tab to your paths for the Synth1 .dll file, and the path of your large zip library.  Then just hit 'Build' and ba-da-boom (well actually it will take a few moments) you will have over 15,000 patches all nicely organized!  There is a 'Show Synth1' button in the UI that opens the synth editor.  Have fun!!!

Grabbed a couple of colors from the Studio One UI, the gray background from the trackview for the panel color, and the blue background from the icons as the text background.  Can't do anything with the LEDs or other elements in the Synth1 UI, but this gray is a bit lighter than the previous one.  The hex codes are 'Panel = #212325' and 'Text = #477A9D'

NICE!! and thanks to all contributing to this.  On the neutrinosky download page, you will want to download the .zip file.  I, too, just downloaded the .exe file, and that doesn't quite work, as I had never installed it before.  Then follow abacab's instructions as above.  You will also want to put the large 14000 + .zip libraries in the 'zipbank' folder that will be created when you install Synth1.

If you really want to get the most out of this software, just watch the video tutorial that the developer created.

Excellent search and category functions!  Set any patch in the favorites list.  Double click on a patch and it will display possible matches.  Pick random, & explore the massive patch library, and you may stumble upon a gem!

Re: Introducing "Synth1 Librarian" 2018/02/08 04:34:29 (permalink)
Yes thanks to abacab once again.  Love the two extra GUI skins as well.  Excellent.  I am about to install the librarian on my second computer.  I have a 32 bit machine with the same full Synth 1 install on it so I can test out the librarian first.

There are two types of files that Synth 1 can read.  One is a zipped file and they tend to come under the External category when you select OPT. (0ver on the left hand pane)

The other type of file is just a normal folder with Synth 1 sounds inside.  There is a bit of a trick getting Synth 1 to see these properly and they fall under the Internal category when you press OPT.  If anyone his having issues getting Synth 1 to find those let me know and I can explain.

From what I can see though the librarian prefers the zipped files type.  Which is fine.  Normal folder with Synth 1 sounds can also be zipped up as well and put int he same folder as the 173 zipped files!

Love those sounds.  I have got right into this synth again thanks to abacab.  Thanks very much John.

The last version of Synth1 was released as 64-bit compatible, so no need to find a 32-bit host any more > https://www.kvraudio.com/product/synth1-by-ichiro-toda

As far as the zipped files are concerned, that is the dev's intent.  Here is a recent statement he made on his blog:

At this time, Synth1 Librarian only works against the zipbank folder, not the individual soundbank folders (personally, I’m too lazy to use the soundbank folders!)
You could manually create zip files from your individual soundbank folders, and drop the zip files into the zipbank folder. That would allow Synth1 Librarian to discover them

You are welcome Jeff, glad you are finding it useful.  I am constantly amazed at the sounds in this thing now that I can narrow my search a bit.  I am trying to learn two new DAWs, and this keeps wasting my time, LOL!!!

I came across some free Synth 1 sounds from BigTone:
https://rekkerd.org/patches/sound-designer/bigtone/

They are good. With the librarian you will have to zip these up of course. Otherwise they can be put into a folder and you just need to point Synth 1 to that folder.

There are another 22 banks here:
https://rekkerd.org/patches/plug-in/synth1/

We may have some of these already not sure but might be worth checking. Update: Some of these are real nice!

I compared that BigTone file with the one I already have from the large download, and the patches have the same names, so I assume it is a dupe.  Except for one thing, that patch #128 is missing from the rekkerd version.

I really like BigTone.  Have the Analog Basics expansion that he did for SynthMaster 2.  Also very nice!  In most of those patches he makes very effective use of some combination of the mod wheel, pitch bend, aftertouch, and velocity. Makes them very playable and expressive.

He usually makes notes in his patch names of those additional modulation controls, and there a quite a few in the Synth1 bank as well.  Look out for the ones that have MW + PB.  They can have some unusual morphing effects in the sound!

I still have to check out those other banks...

OK, here is what I was able to match up with the big zip bank.  From that 2nd list at rekkerd od 22 banks, these are duplicates:

BigTone Synth1
Dubstep and DnB
Synth1: Xenos Signature
Luck's Rainbow
Teksonik 2008 Edit
Synth1 Presets by Lunatique
Synth1 Ouroboros Bank3
TC-Synth1

The rest seem to be fresh.  The batch by Lloyd McKay are very interesting, as well as are many others here!

Great find!

Thanks abacab for weeding out the duplicate banks.  Much appreciated.  I removed them and just added the remaining ones in.  And yes there are some real nice sounds in there for sure.

I was just fiddling around with Synthmaster (another very nice synth too) and some some BigTone patches when I stumbled on those Synth 1 banks by accident.

I think it may be time for some 'BigTone' schooling.  May just have to try and reverse engineer a few of his patches.  When he assigns the PB wheel to something besides pitch bend, it's just nuts!

One way to do that would be to create the signal flow block diagram of Synth 1.  Something I might be prepared to do.  With all the variable controls indicated.  It is based around the Clavia Nord Lead 2 Red synth so that might be a great starting point.

That way you can study a patch that you find interesting and you will be able to get a handle on how he is programming this signal flow.  I have already downloaded the Nord Lead 2 manual and between that and the Synth 1 signal flow I should be able to generate the block diagram.  I might just need a little time.

Found an old discussion on KVR, and it was suggested by one forum user that this was a simplified signal flow for Synth1:  https://www.kvraudio.com/...iewtopic.php?t=263700#

Note: this is missing a lot of stuff. I'm just putting the basic components.
The first two EGs have fixed outputs while the third and the two LFOs are demultiplexed to one of many possible destinations.

'Synth1 Ver1.13 Manual' is here.  Contains a basic structure diagram, and a description of the parameters.
