Invisible

Here is a song I have been working on for the last couple of weeks while I have been tweaking "Peace".  Funny how sometimes they just come together more easily than others.  I am liking this Christian Rock song and I think I have everything pretty well balanced in this mix.  If you get a chance, I would appreciate a second set of ears.

hey this is very cool. dude you sound just like Tom Petty! i'm not really into the whole christian rock thing but i can appreciate it artistically. this is most def head and shoulders above a lot of what i have heard in the genre.

question: are you misspelling 'invisible' on purpose? just curious about that and if relates to any play on words etc... like credit card debt or something ;-)

    I like the song.

It has a cool groove. Some nits I have is that it has a really busy full sound where the acoustic is playing.... almost distorted..... could be compression cranked up?

I heard a few tuning issues.

Hi Michael, this is one of your best.  Like Daren said, your voice has a Tom Petty quality which serves this song well.  I hear some imbalances in the mix, but, oh so slight.  The lead guitar at the end could be elevated a bit, but otherwise this is a good effort.

    All the best,

ABV, I really appreciate the listen.  I think it is really cool that this kind of music is not really your thing, yet you took the time to give me some feedback.  I am a 70-80's rocker at heart.  I still mostly listen to that genre and era of music.  I decided about 8 years ago to give this style a go as a conscious effort to....kind of break the mold... of what I was hearing in the CCM genre.  Shoot, I am too old to tour any more, so I redirected my efforts in writing in hopes that something may come of being different in this market.

About the misspelling, I like your idea better, that it was all planned.  But in all honesty, I am just a horrible speller.  I guess I am working on giving CJ a run for his money.  I completely rely on spell check in the business world and unfortunately, the forums are not really good about having spell check.  I guess I better fix that on my next go round.

Herb,  I got your PM and responded.  I thank you again for your constant support.  I will look into some of the areas you have mentioned.

Lynn, thanks bro.  I am liking this one a lot as well.  It came together really fast.  It started out as something to do while I was fixing my other song, Peace, and it took over and happened in an explosion of creativity.  The lead guitar at the end is low on purpose.  I am not that good of a lead player and it was not my best effort, so I kept it low to give a busy build up type fealing at the end, but not loud enough for everyone to pick out what a terrible lead player I am.  I am really happy with my bass playing as of late, this one was like a one or two take effort.  Bass is starting to become second nature to me.

Gotta agree with Herb. The mix sounds crowded, even in the verses. Probably over compression or too much gain staging?

Thanks to all of your suggestions, I have gone back and tweaked this one.  I believe that I have everything sitting pretty well now.  Made some slight pitch corrects to a few of the verse vocals; please let me know if you hear any pitch issues on this version.

Hey, this is really nice!  I especially like the build up to the chorus where it all kicks in.  Great stuff!  You've got a great voice!  There are still a few pitch issues in the beginning of the verses.

    This is really nice.

Not a big CR fan personally, but there's nothing much wrong with this and plenty to like. Nicely done overall. I would maybe bring the drums forward some and the vox a little too especially early on. A few too many repeats of the last line for me, could use some variation in there. Needn't be much, just enough to make it sound a little less like the needle is stuck (showing my age now!).

    BIABdude, Thank you for listening!

Janet, thank you for listening as well.  I like the way the build up came together on this one.  I am getting a little better at arrangement, when and how to add instruments.  Maybe equally as important, when to drop the out for a while.  Your comment about my vocals made my day when I read it.  I have never considered myself much of a singer and I have always felt like I am just struggling to get by.  Thank you soooo much for that comment!

Makke, I am very please that you like the song.  I used to fight to not sound 70's.  I gave up.  I guess if I sound like Petty, then I will embrace it.

Paulo, I am especially happy that you mentioned that you are not a big fan of Christian music, but you still found plenty to like here.  I am trying really hard not to "sound like" the typical CR music.  I know exactly what needle stuck means, I am probably showing mine as well.  I was going for something different with this ending, trying to break the CR mold.

Nice, immediate hook. Definitely Tom Petty and I thought a bit of Neil Young in there too with the crunchy guitars.
My only problem was the vocal tuning on the last word of every line in the first verse. You hit the same off note each time and, as this is where you are trying to grab the listener, it would be worth putting it right.

Well, it has taken a while, but I finally got around to tweaking this song once more.  I think I have all of the pitch issues delt with.  I also reworked the lead guitar at the end and hopefully, it sounds a little better.  Still, no Danny Danzi, but it is the best I can probably do for now.

Hi Michael.  I'm off the laptop now and in the studio to listen to this one.  I seldom listen to CR myself, but this Forum is a good place to learn and get new ideas and fresh viewpoints.  These guys help me all the time!

I like where you're trying to go with this tune, and I like the way the crunch guitar comes in and goes out.

A few little things-  The whole mix sounds like it has a bit of a "boxy" EQ on it on my system. Is that intentional?  The hi hat seems very far left, and is a little disconcerting to me.  This was something I used to do on every one of my tunes a long time ago, and I learned to bring it more toward center on the opposite side of the snare.  maybe it's just me, but it seems like the crunch guitar is right on top of your vocal.  It would sound killer in wide stereo I think.. just my opinion there....and maybe bring the stereo acoustic more to center so as to have a nice panorama of guitars, with your vocal reserved for dead center.

I think it's great when someone recognizes their weaker facets, but endeavors to make them stronger!

    Good job.

    Cheers!

Tony, interesting observations on this one.  I used the LP64 EQ on this one a did a little boost to the highs in the 4K range, but it has been that way on all of my previous demos.  I could try backing it off a little.  Did n't notice the high hat, but will listen again when I get a chance.

Going to wait and see what others think as well, then go back for one last revision.
