Iowa Blackie - RIP

I know ... this is a weird thread, but it fascinated me that people like this are still out there.

I was sitting at the railroad crossin' waitin' fer a train' a few miles away from my house. I happened to glance over at the guard rail because some writing on it caught my eye. It was a huge long poem and it was signed Iowa Blackie. It was something about trains, but I don't remember many details now.

I never thought much of it, but seeing these threads recently about Black Dog made me think of the name Iowa Blackie so I did a search on the internet for him. It turns out he was a real person and it wasn't just some graffiti by the railroad tracks by some dumb kid that I saw. He was a traveling hobo poet and that's how he made his living. Apparently he was the real deal. He passed away a few months ago.

Iowa Blackie

I must have watched too much Artie Johnson on Laugh-in when I was young and foolish.  It's different now that I'm old and foolish.  Very interesting--but unfunny!

    Interesting.

We have an old bridge out in the forest west of here. The guard rail has a very long poem etched into it. It's been there for at least 20 years. I always enjoy giving it a good read and wondering how it has survived for so long.

     Thanks for the heads up.

    best regards,
    mike

We have a forest near us.  It also has a west.  The leaves can be arranged into letters that spell out a limerick that's at least 20 years old.

    Dude!  You're freaking me out!

Yeah, well I think I recognize the writing style Mr Bubba... which by the way is an old family name just west of me.

Was that you and your poem? Were you ever abducted by aliens?

Aliens and I go way back.  Sometimes they abduct me.  Sometimes I abduct them.  Sometimes, we go out and cut crop circles.  Sometimes, we sieze control of world leaders and use them like hand puppets to do something stupid(er).

    I can't wait.

The next time I'm out there performing it as monologue (someone in the group always takes a turn) I'm gonna tell everyone that I know the guy that scrawled the poem in that bridge.

Aren't you afraid of seeming indifferent from the group?

    I know from awkward.

Indifferent is new to me, but I'm growing accustomed to it.

Are you the ones making the crop circles that say "Kilroy was here"?
