Is 7zip just as good as Winrar for extracting .rar on Win7 x64?
My download of Sonic Couture's EP73 piano library is in .rar and I haven't bought Winrar in the x64 era. I have an old x86 version somewhere, someplace. Will 7-zip cover my needs? Is there any better choice? The read me file that came with the sample library implied that Winrar is the best choice.

Been using it on Win7 64bit for some time. Works fine for rar files.

Thanks Scook. I had 7zip on an older laptop too and just never installed this stuff when most of my zip needs became covered in the OS tools.

Same here, 7zip works great with RARs on Win7 - it's all I use on two different machines.

7Zip is great for all kinds of things!! :-) One example is that you can zip up a project of any size and break it into 100 MB chunks if you want. Then your friend can receive all the 100 MB chunks and unzip. You can also password protect it.

I wonder why Sonic Couture states that using anything but WinRar for Windows is likely to result in errors.

7zip worked well. In fact the SonicCouture Clavinet library .zip didn't extract properly using the native Windows .zip functionality. I had to purposely use 7zip to get an error free extraction. That was weird. It makes me wonder if there are errors in the remaining files that I thought Windows native zip extraction processed without issue.

Mike, I've been using Winrar (freeware) for the past 4-5 years and it has done an excellent job (both 32 & 64 bit). (Of course, I don't really use it for anything more than unpacking downloads.)

Thanks Mesh, I was just trying to avoid spending $29 on a extraction app to extract the library I just saved $30 on. :-)

Technically speaking, you don't need to buy it. it will just give you a nag screen when physically open the program. I've been using it for... 10ish years without buying it. It's actually a bit of a joke in the tech industry that someone will eventually buy a copy. ;)

:-) Thanks for the heads up. I should have known. I did buy a copy years ago, but as I mentioned it was 32bit and I lost track of the install disc I made back then.

I don't know the answer to that, but I did read that it has the capability to split a zip file up into chunks, so at the very least it has a similar functionality.

No, 7-Zip creates 7z, xz, zip, gzip, bzip2, tar, wim archives For details see http://www.7-zip.org/ Rar is a proprietary format, AFAIK there are no free rar compressors.

Yup, 7-Zip works great for extracting RAR files! I usually create the RAR files with WinRAR, but 7-Zip does a fine job of extracting them, too.

The file created in the video is not an RAR archive. It is a 7z archive with a file name changed. When a compression tool tries to open a file, it reads the file header to determine which type of algorithm to use for decompression. Both WinRAR and WinZip can uncompress a 7z file.

I suspect 7-zip is one of the reason the Winrar developer is trying to push his new compression format. I don't think he'll succeed, but one never knows. Regards, Dan
