Is CDex Safe?

I was going to download this to extract files from a CD as WAVs or MP3s, but is it safe?

By safe you mean does it contain a virus?

None of the versions I have used ever have, but unless you download it from a reliable source who can say. Currently the most reliable source is the project page on SourceForge. If you mean does it work without damaging your computer. Yes it works very nicely.

I don't believe Media Player will create a wave file.

Thanks for the feedback.

By the way, I had no idea Sonar would do this.  I feel REALLY stupid now!  I can just import from a CD into an audio track.  In fact, this is better than ripping wit another tool since what I am trying to do is put several short CD tracks together for something.

Hi Konradh,
CDex is very good for ripping and converting. Very easy to use. I use this program many years and never had a problem with virus or other bad things. You can download it from here: http://www.chip.de/downloads/CDex_12997142.html

I will say if you're using cdex to rip to mp3, you might want to look at something like Exact Audio Copy instead.Cdex has been out of development for years and is a bit outdated when it comes to modern compression.

Same here, Cdex is an excellent (and very sophisticated) bit of software for mp3 conversions Konrad.

In particular, the Variable Bitrate conversions are incredible.

CDex no longer seems to be safe!

I installed it a few days ago and had to jump through many hoops during install to not install the bundled adware.

Unfortunately it still installed something called AkamaiHD.

Here's a link on how to uninstall this malware in case you made the same mistake I did.  The guys that screwed up CDex are really bad people.

Re: Is CDex Safe? November 30, 15 4:22 AM (permalink)
The additional, annoying garbage which will be installed depends on where you get CD Ex from (e.g. filehippo, cdex.mu, download.cnet.com, major-geeks, free-codecs yadda yadda ad infinitum).  Some places are significantly more annoying than others (steer well clear of cnet.com's downloads).

The installer from cdex.mu does come bundled with some of this crap (e.g. 'Search More Now', some horrible Yahoo desktop search bollox), but the installer does clearly indicate which extra packages it will install and you can decline all of them.  Seems to be the case with most if not all free utility software downloads these days, unfortunately.

CDex is great for CD ripping. One of my favorite features is that it can retrieve album and song names from online databases. Together with LAME it's all I need to rip CDs to MP3s or WAVs.

I use Audiograbber.  As long as you have an MP3 encoder, such as LAME, it will rip to MP3 or wav.  It will also rip Karaoke CD+G discs.  I have an old (paid) copy from when it was shareware.  Its free now.

Works on XP to Win 10.

Like the others you have to be observant when downloading or installing to avoid the bloatware.
