Is Developing DXi a waste of time?

I was thinking of doing some experimentation with VSTi programming, then realized that I prefer using the DXi softsynths for some reason and started looking at using the DXi SDKs.  The closer I look at things the more it looks like this a technology that may have been abandoned?  Is that just a bad impression on my part or is there something more to it than that?
