Is SONAR actually an acronym?

I noticed that Cakewalk always capitalizes SONAR at all times. This often indicates an acronym. Since the creators were obviously clever beasts I was wondering if maybe there is a specific meaning behind it.

The AR at the end kind of implies "Audio Recorder" (and wasn't SONAR Cake's first move into pro audio capture after being mostly a MIDI tool?). Maybe the S is for "Studio".

So is there some cryptic meaning I'm overlooking or am I just getting my Dan Brown on?

Inquiring minds and all that...

Since "Pro Audio" was in the name ... you might assume that the capture part pre-dated SONAR.

Also, since CAKEWALK was spelled with all capitals ... you might assume that CAKEWALK was an acronym.

[edit] I think it was either CAKEWALK (product name) or cakewalk (logo)

Sonar used to mean "Sound Navigation & Ranging." Basically a sonic version of RADAR.
I'm guessing that Cakewalk used that reference for their name.

Ha! Shows what I know. I hadn't considered that the original term SONAR was an acronym. I mean... I think I kind of sorta learned that at some point but there is only so much info I can cram in this little pea noodle I call a brain.

Here's an old discussion of the name...

http://forum.cakewalk.com/Sonar-Whats-with-the-name-m1604124.aspx?high=sonar+name

I remember long ago Cakewalk explaining why they used all caps, but I don't remember the exact reason.  It seems that it had to do with copyrighting the name for the product.  I have noticed that product reviews and online sales often have the product listed as "Sonar" instead of the accurate "SONAR".

I started with CAKEWALK Pro Audio 6.0 in the 90's.

I started with Cakewalk Pro Audio 4.0...
Anyway, I think the company name back then was Twelve Tone, Inc. or something like that, and Cakewalk was a line of secquencers where Pro Audio was the top model. Later, they changed the company name to Cakewalk and the software name Sonar, not necessarily in that order.

(Does that mean in a few years the company name will be Sonar and the DAW name Platinum...?)
