Also...tangentially...for anyone to chime in on...considering all the previous recording techniques and fads that have come and gone over the course of rock/pop history...is "looping" just a current trend...or is it here for the long haul?

Any technique that has been used in pop music for over 45 years is more than just a trend.

I keep seeing statements like this in many threads and, since I am (primarily) not a looper, I'm just wondering whether it is true or not.  If so does that mean a gradual ending of "non-looper" support?  Or an eventual program that won't suit traditional linear audio/midi recording folks at all?  I still find X1 an incredible tool for what might be termed traditional recording and music production but have to admit even a dimbulb like me can see the changes happening.  Mind you, I'm not saying anything about the subjective value or merits of any way of making music.  All I'm asking is what some of you who do make music primarily using loop based production techniques think of X1's current and supposed future workflow.

Maybe I haven't gotten quite up to speed with it yet, I don't find the Groove Matrix as easy to work with as P5's matrix.

The looping stuff helps for rock as well.  In the 80s I would plug in a drum machine and play a few riffs over the beat hoping to come up with something cool.  When HS2002 came out, I would use the groove clip feature to load up a drum loop, stretch it out for a few dozen measures, and play a few riffs over the beat hoping to come up with something cool.  Now with X1 I can start up a step sequencer to come up with a beat and play a few riffs over the beat hoping to come up with something cool.

The other place where some of these pattern based features help is in songwriting.  Sometimes I'll have a loop and a few ideas for choruses, bridges, and turnarounds.  It's nice to be able to record all of these as patterns and audition them in various patterns to get a better feel of which parts to use.

That's why I asked...I wouldn't have a clue. It is a bit wacky... Sorry...responding to Billy...damn iPad.

I actually am getting a kick watching/reading the replies in this thread.   Obviously there is no real consensus.  That's probably a good thing.

But I must say, again, that there really isn't anything I can't do (and I would dare assert most) in Sonar.   That doesn't mean I don't use/need/rely on 3rd party plugins to help it out (I do I do), but as a "host" it does its job.

Work-flows may vary - and that may account for why some feel one way and some another way; but overall I'd bet most would be hard pressed to explain what they _can't_ do in Sonar.

If I was looping, Sonar I think would drive me loopy.

I guess I was thinking of X1 being geared toward people who might want to use groove loops or acid loops exclusively, no playing or sequencing. I wasn't thinking of making one's own loops. I assume most of us do that with drums and to some extent with other instruments... I just had tunnel vision for a moment.
