Is There A Way To Set The Default Input Of A Track?

Hello Everyone,

Maybe I am doing this wrong, but my understanding is, when recording vocals, you need to set the input for the track to the LEFT channel only as it is the only one the mic sends sound to, otherwise you end up with a stereo track and the vocals all on the left.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Either way, every time I add a new track, it defaults to the stereo input of my audio interface.  Is there a way to automatically set the left every time?

Thanks!

You could add a track, set the input to left, then save the track as a template.  Call it something like "vocal".  In the future instead of inserting a track, insert the template and the input will already be set.

True, but then I can't use the "insert tracks" option - say if I want to add 10 tracks in one scoop.   Thanks.

You plan on adding 10 tracks pointing to the same mono input at one time? If you need to do that insert one and clone it. That seems like a totally different scenario than what was initially described.

What kind of interface do you have?

I would like to setup my tracks in advance.   They are all vocal tracks so they will all need to be pointing to the LEFT input.  I would like a way to do this somehow.

A project or track template can have as many tracks as you wish. Some use templates with many more tracks than initially needed. It is also possible to quick group and change the inputs all at one time.

You could also quickly clone the first track to however many you need, then assign a series of inputs to them.  (Only one track selected here)

I admit though that I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish.  How many inputs does the UR22 have?

good suggestions here - thank you!

The UR22 has 2 inputs, but each input of course has a L/R channel.

Seems like a single template with 2 tracks would work great.  Set one up for LEFT, the other for RIGHT.  If you only need one of them, it's super easy to delete the track using the input you don't need.

Based on total and average clicks counts, that's the way I would go

why would I want RIGHT if the mic never sends signal over it?

Re: Is There A Way To Set The Default Input Of A Track? 2016/01/17 14:12:51 (permalink)
In cases where you're using both LEFT (1) and RIGHT (2) at the same time, or you're using RIGHT (2) instead of LEFT (1).  If you're only ever going to plug the mic into LEFT (1), then a single track template will do nicely.

The UR22 has 2 MONO inputs, 1 & 2, which used together make a single stereo channel.  You can plug your mic into 1 or 2, or two mics at the same time.  When Sonar shows you these inputs, it shows them as LEFT-1, RIGHT-1 or STEREO-1, which can be confusing.  When you choose STEREO-1, left will be your hardware channel 1 and right will be your hardware channel 2.

When Sonar shows you LEFT-1, it is referring to item (2) below.
When Sonar shows you RIGHT-1, it is referring to item (4) below.
When Sonar shows you STEREO-1, it is referring to both (2) & (4) below.

Sorry if I'm making this worse or telling you something you already know ... I'll be happy to clarify more if I can.
