Is This a Buffer Issue?

New problem:

- Sometimes external MIDI instruments don't play: even when I stop the track and click on a note in Staff view.  If I reload the file, or load a different file, they are usually OK.
- Sometimes virtual instruments don't play on certain songs.  If I load a different file, or reload the same file, they are usually OK.
- I have noticed one of my MIDI keyboards lagging behind the beat, but in some files, it is OK.
- Sometimes Session Drummer misses notes: even when I stop the track and click on the notes.  (This issue was reported quite a while back, and the advice I got was to check MIDI buffers, but not playing notes when the track is stopped is odd.)

Default MIDI buffer is 250 ms.  Based on a Cakewalk bulletin, I increased it to 700--but that is actually when the VI issue started.  I went back to 250 and am having intermittent MIDI issues.  (Not sure if the VI issue will come back or not.)

Q1: Is this a buffer issue, or something else?
Q2: How large can you/should you make the buffer before I break something else, and what exactly will I break?

Thoughts?  Thanks!

q1: It could be something different, but if this started when you played around with the buffer then it is likely that it is a buffer issue.

    q2:IIRC I saw some people reaching 1000.

Try deleting the Aud.ini file and see if it gets better.

you can raise the buffer to 1000.  I don't think this a buffer issue though from the sounds of it.  250 should be fine.  I run a ton of instances of stylus, trillian, synth squad at that level with no issues

Thanks Sharp and Syko <<Hey, that's a good name for a band or a magic act.

Syko, What do you think is causing this and what's the story on the new violin?

it was just a joke about a guy on the forums comparing sonar changing the interface to them redesigning his old violin and he could no longer play it.  He said he wanted his old violin(8.5) back.

I wish i knew what your problem was.  you can raise the buffer to 1000 just because thats as high as it will let you.  the only ill effect with high numbers is a little latency.  you can try raising it to 1000 and if that doesn't work you can scratch buffers as the cause.

yeah i've been using sykodelic lately to put out some dance tracks......

the part that really gets me is the notes not sounding when you press them while not in playback.  I have occasionally witnessed the other symptoms but after a reboot they disappeared so i never was able to really track it down.

I have been plagued with hardware and software issues for the last eight weeks.  It's getting a bit frustrating, but I am making progress.  This last one really has me baffled.

I wonder if something is running on Windows that is interrupting...?

what are you using midi interface wise or is it straight to USB and maybe the chain of midi might be the issue also.

and loads of things that poll in windows can cause issues.. the obvious ones being network / wifi related polling .. e..g if they are sharing the same IRQ

What is your DPC latency.  If you don't know run this http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml and report back with results....

Come to think of it since I got my DPC latency inline my issues have all gone away.  turning of HPET was the last tweak I made which took my DPC from 80-100 down to less than 20
