Is an extra 0.26Ghz worth the buck?

Hey Cakewalkers,

I'm caught between two laptops that only differ in processing power. Everything else is the same. They differ in that one has a 2.4GHz processor and the other has a 2.66GHz processor (Both Intel dual core and both have 4gm ram, 32bit system)

The additional cost is £184 or $300

I would like to know...who would go for the extra 9.9% in CPU power for the price?

Also how would this relate in real terms.....does 2.66Ghz mean an extra track at 24bit or not?

Any advice welcomed.

Kind Regards

Rodders

    Not I.

I would choose the better price assuming the other specs are equivalent.  7200rpm drives, ports, yadda yadda

With the new Intel "i" processors, I wouldn't buy one without that.  I just bought a new Lenovo "ideapad" with an i5 (quad core) processor, and 6GB of RAM for under $600 US (it was on a promotion sale) direct from Lenovo.  Ordered it on a Monday and got it by Friday of the same week.

One of the Laptop's uses will be Sonar and an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R (USB) for on-site recordings.

    Thanks Firebred,

I done a little research into these newish processors and apparently they are way better than anything else, especially the second generation ones which are oddly named 'Sandy Bridge'

They should be coming out soon so I think I'll wait.

    Kind Regards

I think there is a thread in computers about "Sandy Bridge." You might want to check it out.

There is a "bug" in a specific chipset for the SandyBridge (not the i7 CPU's).  Intel is working on a fix and the new chipset should be out any day and then the vendors will produce the new motherboards with the new chipset - probably by mid March before new motherboards and new PC's with the chipset appear.

Dell pulled the affected models from sales and they are predicting mid March to resume sales, and replace the motherboards in systems already sold.

    Cheers Guys,

I bought a 13" i7Core MacBook today, the quicker of the two models at 2.7GHz. No doubt it will take an age to get through the post but looking forward to testing it out. Especially when comparing it with what I have at the moment (see below).

    Big thanks for your input

    Regards
