Is it just me or are young men styling themselves like Hitler these days?

I usually ignore current fashion trends because it's not worth worrying about, but when I see kids walking around with this current short back and sides and side parting, often paired with a mustache, I can't help wondering if they've been inspired by a certain Führer from history. So I did a quick search and lo and behold found this reference to guys going into a West Village barbers and asking for the "Hitler Youth."

Personally it's not an image I'd want to cultivate. What's next, the "Kim Jong"? The "Saddam Hussein"?

Do a GIS for "Emo Hitler".

Also in India apparently there was/is some kind of hipster fashion movement revolving around the swastika and general Nazi imagery. It makes sense in a way because the swastika was essentially stolen from an ancient hindi symbol so they were supposedly "taking it back" as it were. However it was being done in a very lame, attention seeking kind of way.

IDK... I've had some extremely hipster acquaintances. They're a little strange and misguided.

I have a friend back home who's a tattoo artist and very spiritual and who is into this whole "reclaiming the swastika" movement. I mean I do see the reasoning behind it but on the other hand I can't help thinking "let it go," lol....

I've noticed the trend a few years ago - seemed to coincide with the Boardwalk Empire series.

I don't personally associate the haircut w/ Nazi Germany, and I've sported something similar for years, simply because I cut my own hair and that was the easiest thing short of a buzz cut. Plus I have a rather big head and I need some hair on it or else I look like a giant light bulb.

There is something military to it I guess - as a cadet when I was a teenager, I used to grow my hair where I could, and the only place was on top...

If one associates it w/ Hitler and still goes on sporting it, I think they're unconscious - as a lot of people seem to be. I don't think they really realize...

That being said, personally, I'd rather see someone with that type of haircut than w/ rastas (which make me nauseous) or those long hipster beards. At least it looks cleaner.

EDIT: Or those kids wearing a tuque 365 days a year, inside, outside...

This thread demonstrates why the symbol won't be reclaimed any time soon... because we can't even reclaim something so utterly irrelevant as a hairstyle. By comparison, reclaiming the 'meaning laden' symbol is an impossibility.

I remember a religious group flying a plane over NY a few summers ago with a banner orbed w/ the swastika on it as a way to reclaim the original meaning of a symbol.

Considering the number of Jewish inhabitants in NY, I thought it was pretty stupid.

Plus, we're in 2015 - one would expect that we'd have evolved past such a need for archaic symbols.

With all due respect Rain, you don't look like a refugee from the 30's like some of these nouveau hipsters. I think there are probably "degrees" of short back and sides, lol. Plus you have kids these days with twirly mustaches, lol. Don't be growing one of those anytime soon...

From the profile pics I've seen Rain's got yer standard rock undercut. Almost like a wide mohawk but buzzed in the back. I've has similar cuts.

These kids have what is essentially a completely out of whack bowl cut (like Hitler did).

More like an askew gravy boat cut.

I gotta say, this is a strange conversation. Imma gigglin'.

I had my former boss fooled into thinking I was German - as a matter of fact, most of the time, that's peoples' first guess, regardless of the haircut.

And the haircut varies according to my own laziness. Though these days, my wife insist on me growing my hair, meaning I got rid of the pseudo-mohawk gradually and cut back the top step by step to get there...

Truth be told, I prefer shaving my head and keeping the darn thing as short as possible. But, what woman wants... :P

No chance of me growing one of those ridiculous mustache though. I'll stick to the Vincent Price thing if I have to.

On the other hand, I seem to act as a magnet for religious people of every denomination. At one point, my best very friend was a Jehovah's Witness - the relation even took a rather romantic twist, in spite of her being a very strict JW and rejecting outsiders.

Last summer we spent in NY, my best buddy was an old Jewish man with a passion for Indian jewels...

I'd make a pretty lousy Nazi...

I find the "reclaiming" movements silly as opposed to those who never let it go. There are planty of groups who never let it go to begin with. Various Buddhist and Hindi groups have used the symbol continuously before and after the third reich. The latter never bother to fly planes, make press conference or creat viral campaigns. It just is.

Reminds me of that episode of Father Ted when Ted is accused of being racist toward some new Chinese residents and so he invites them over to convince them that he's not a bigot, and well......

The guys who flew that plane and claimed the Swastika while I was living in NY were called Raëlians.

"Raëlism, also known as Raelianism or the Raëlian movement, is a UFO religion that was founded in 1974 by Claude Vorilhon, now known as Raël. An adherent of Raëlism is a Raëlian."

Back home, their sect is probably the most openly/widely ridiculed.

Obviously, working nightshifts, I made friend with a guy who was a Raëlian... He disappeared a few months later...
