Is it possible to export just a part of a song?
Hi, I want to export just the intro of a song I'm working on. The workaround I've used so far, is to export it, then import the exported file into a new project, cut out what I don't want, add volume fade in's/outs', and then export it again. This time, I tried to add a send on my main master bus to another bus, and add volume automation to that, and export only the output from that bus. The result was the intro, followed by about three minutes of silence (so I had to import that audio into Sonar again, and cut out the silence and export it again). Just curious if there is some quicker way to do this?

Yes, it is. Just highlight the timeline and select the tracks you want included in the export. CJ

The Help file/Manual is your friend.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

yep... I don't know how many times the answer has been right there. Although a lot of times I find it quicker by googling smartly and it brings up listings pointing to the right section of the manual... sometimes trying to find the answer on my own is challenging...

As these folks are saying, highlight (select) a region of the song. You can also Write a Fade to the Master bus to make it fade out the way you want. You can always just right click on the volume automation later and pick Delete Envelope. I find it very useful to put parts of songs into files or onto CDs to evaluate while I'm working. NOTE: When the song is finished, you can use this selection process to avoid too much dead air at the start or end of the song.

In addition to this, sometimes people in the forum offer a better explanation than the manual. I have had moments when I just RTFM and still felt lost. I think if one is to refer someone to the manual, they could have the courtesy to point out where ine manual the desired info is contained instead of using shaming phrases that assume that looking to the manual was not attempted.

Ok, sorry for asking. Usually I would google (which usually brings me to the online Sonar documentation). I actually wasn't aware of that selecting a part would export just that part, and therefore was not aware that it actually was a function in Sonar. So I was hoping there was some kind of workaround that someone on here might know. Thanks for the replies any way. Shows that there is always something new to learn.

Hey, Martinfoss... Asking is totally fine... it is mindboggling what Sonar can do and I've asked a zillion things only to find it is so easy that i'm always amazed...I was just saying, I do find googling very helpful...it often leads me to a post as dub mentioned or the answer I seek... actually, I found this out by highlighting just part of the entire song one time and bingo... just that bit was exported... it's like... cool... makes sense but wouldn't have thought about it! Sonar is sooooo deep that I just assume I'll learn something new each day forever.... There are some folks.... literally computers like "Scook" ...who amaze me... that noggin' of his knows so much it must be basket ball size or definately a pressurized vessel! Reading a reasonable inquiry is waaaay more fun than a post from some whiny dweeb complaining about stuff that isn't true but posting negative garbage anyway... you were respectful, asked a good question, and given what you were doing, it was nice to share an easier way! Happy songwriting!

The manual and online help are not always clear. For example, the Help may something, "Click the Track Manager tool" but will not tell you where that tool is or what it looks like. Thank you for posting your question. When you ask a question here, you help other people who may also wonder but be afraid to ask; and questions often spark other comments that are interesting to everyone. We wouldn't have a forum if noe one asked anything.
