Is it possible to have a midi track's associated isntrument track automatically selected
Is it possible to have a midi track's associated instrument track automatically selected when the midi track is selected? Just curious as this would make bouncing tasks faster. Thanks, Mahlon

Which Midi track have you previously selected?

Hmmm... maybe I'm thinking about this wrong. I guess it wouldn't be possible because the midi track is sending out the data to the vst and the vst is sending back the audio, so the midi track is not really associated with returning audio. I think what I'm trying to get as is, if I have a midi track called "trumpets" and it's output is triggering an external softsynth (VSL VE Pro on another computer). If I want to bounce that trumpet down to a new audio track so I can work with audio instead of midi, I select both the midi track and the instrument track it's associated with (the track receiving the audio data from the vst) in order to get the bounce done. With one track, that's not a big deal. But sometimes I'm picking 6 tracks to bounce out of around 120 total tracks and it would be efficient if those 6 tracks' instrument (vst) tracks were selected when I selected the midi tracks. Would just cut down on a lot of screen scrolling to get everything selected. Which brings me to another minor point. Who thinks it would be a good idea for Sonar to have something like "selection sets"? Sets of multiple selected tracks or busses which could be remembered as a set, and their selection could be recalled with the push of a single button or keystroke. Thanks, Mahlon

When you say instrument track associated with Sonar automatically I associate that with a Cakewalk soft synth set as an instrument track. Your setup is more complex. Which computer do you want to "bounce" the selected tracks to? Look up Grouping in Sonar. You're looking for a short cut to doing it a track at a time back to Sonar it sounds like and bounce the entire set of tracks through another computer at the same time instead of arming six tracks in Sonar to record and then bouncing those six tracks to a stereo. I don't know if you can get multiple bounce that way. The double (two computers) level setups would be just as hard.

Thanks for your help. I think I'm confusing the terminology. I shouldn't say instrument track. I really mean an audio track which has it's input set to receive input from a soft synth, not the hybrid Instrument Track. I guess I was calling it instrument track just because I never use the hybrid "instrument track", and when I set an audio tracks input to something other than "None", the tracks icon changes to a half midi/half instrument track. Multiple bounces of tracks in Sonar are working fine; I just wanted a short cut to automatically selecting that audio track (the one with it's input set to the soft synths output) when I select any midi track sending data to that soft synth. Or have selection sets where I can quickly select a number of tracks by clicking on just one track. I'll have a look into grouping. Thanks for the help. Mahlon Mahlon

FWIW, I would look into freezing your synths rather than bouncing. This has a couple of immediate advantages: - It's a ONE click option
- By unfreezing you have immediate access to your MIDI track, enabling you to make adjustments quick & easy
- You don't have to archive/hide your existing tracks
- You don't have to disconnect the synth to free up system resources
- Selecting the appropriate freeze settings doesn't touch your Fx bin, automation etc unless YOU want it to.

All good points. I'll try it. I'm using the bouncing at the end of the composing stage to take everything to audio for mixing. Mahlon

Yes, I prefer to mix purely audio, and this is just as easily done by freezing your soft synths as opposed to the rather long winded option of bouncing. You will still need to bounce any external synths driven by Midi, but I find it FAR more convenient just to freeze your soft synths.
