Is it possible to make an audio track a midi track?

I've bounced tracks to audio, but is it possible to bounce to midi?

There are programs that make audio into midi, but it is not very detailed. Mostly it will do a single line melody, not a multitrack song. I know that Band in a Box and Powertracks Pro audio will do some of this.

Why do you want to do this process? This info will help some of us make suggestions.

Changing the tempo in an audio file without changing the pitch. Unless that's possible with Cakewalk?

It's supposed to be possible.....but ...the quickest and best way is to simply record the track again, at the different tempo. Trust me....when I say..it IS the easiest way to do it, and get satisfactory results.

I don't know if MC4 has this feature ( I think not) or not since I never have a need for it.... but Cakewalk used to have a demo on time stretching and shrinking.... where you could stretch or shrink an audio clip to fit a certain time frame...they used a 30 second radio commercial spot with I believe a 26 second audio clip and stretched it to fit 30 seconds.... of course..it sounded "perfect" but it's not something I would use..... I messed around with this feature a few times just playing (this was Cakewalk Pro 8 deluxe version...top of the product line at the time) and could never get the results they got so I abandoned any thoughts of using it to "fix" things.... and just recorded the tracks again.

I know I'll probably end up recording the tracks again, but I thought I'd give it a shot as the audio tracks to be re-recorded are numerous and very subtle. It would take a long time and not sure if I could even capture some of the things I did. Know what I mean? It was just one of those one time moments.

    Yeah but....

I have discovered numerous times, that what I thought was a "once in a lifetime take" wasn't.... after recording it a second (or even more) time.... I actually played a much better part the second or third take than the original..... and at times, the retakes actually ended up changing the song in a good way.....

So the moral of the story is: Don't be afraid to hit "delete contents of track" and start again.

when I re-record an older song of mine...that essentially what I do.

I always suggest saving the file under a slightly different name like song , and song2 this way you could go back.

If you are just wanting to slow down a bit or speed up a bit i agree with Herb on this just redo. Here is the real problem, if you were to convert the audio into midi successfully, it would not sound like the original audio, it would sound like whatever synth you ran it thru.

I've tried an audio-to-MIDI application or two, and to be quite frank they were rubbish in the little time I used them. Very innacurate. But as Robomusic says, surely you don't want to turn an audio recording into a MIDI track? A violin, flute, guitar or whatever turned into a MIDI synth will sounded a poor copy, unless you're wanting to change the sound entirely into something more synthetic. And if you started with a MIDI recording and bounced it to Audio...the trick is to never delete the MIDI! Just mute the track and hide it away. Then it's available to make changes to later in the edit.
