Is it possible to only have the metronome in my headphones?

I'm using Sonar Professional and I was wondering if it's possible to have only the sound of the metronome in my headphones and not the sound of the instrument I'm recording? I'm right next to my guitar amp and the sound coming through my amp and headphones simultaneously is too loud.

Thanks.

I'd probably just mute the track

Depends on your interface. Both my MOTU and Behringer can be set up that way.

Look up 'Input Echo' in the Help/Documentation menu.

The button just to the right on the record button on each audio track in the input monitoring on / off button. When you hover over it it should say so if tooltips are not turned off, that is. It's also referred to as input echo. same thing.

The way I read the question it sounded like he is recording through an amp (not through a guitar sim or w/fx) so I agree yes input echo should be off if direct monitoring is available in this situation. The less latency the better.

Totally depends on how your audio interface is set up for monitoring.
It would be helpful if you included which interface you are using in your post.
Many here might have the same and you would get a solid answer.

I have a presonus firepod, logically it can have a seperate stereo mix for each of its 4 stereo outputs (or alternatively, 8 individual mono mixes based on how sends are set up)

Sorry I'm not by Sonar right now, but I would think that if Sonar gives you the option to send different track/bus outputs on your interface (for example, on my Firepod, headphones and main output are combined, but if I use the second stereo pair of outputs for my monitors, I could route the metronome to just the "main" output along with the mix, and then run the mix through the second pair of outputs to the monitors without sending the metronome there) so you could do some trickery there to make it work.

My method might be extremely wrong but it's how I WOULD do it if I wasn't so savvy as to just hit the hot key for the metronome when I wanted to turn it on and off ;)

logically you would turn the fader down on the track you are recording (this wont effect the metronome volume),
if that doesn't help you have to ask yourself...
Is having an amp blasting away right next to me while recording really a good idea ?

Unfortunately it's my only option right now.

I'm using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. I don't think I have many monitoring options with it.

Are the monitor outputs and the headphone outputs seperate on the 2i2?

Once you get the metronome to work in your headphones be sure to keep it on low because, when recording vocals, the shrill clicks will bleed out of your phones into the mic. You may not notice it at first because it is low but it can ruin a good vocal track if you are not careful. You will especially notice it once you compress the vocal in the mix.

Set the metronome bus volume so you can barely hear it in the mix, this will likely prevent it from bleeding out of your phones into the mic.. :)

It's been so long since I've used my interface I didn't realize there is a direct monitor switch on the unit. I turned that off and the problem is solved.
