Is room treatment for monitoring or recording or both?

what is room treatment? is it for the purpose of monitoring the music and the mix or does it also serve a purpose for recording.  what do all those foam blocks actually do?  do they block out sound or do they absorb sound?  or are they used to sound proof a room?  if they absorb sound, isn't that the microphones job?

This is a very large subject, not really one that can be addressed completely in a forum like this. Room treatment is for both the recording and monitoring phase, and can be different for each. For myself, I record in different rooms than I monitor/mix in. Each of the rooms are treated differently, for different reasons and for different environments.

I am sure others will give opinions and advise, but the best thing at this point would be to do some independent research. There is a lot of information out there, and you need to read as much of it as you can.

    both,

Presumably if you do not treat your monitor space you will not really hear or know what changes you have made in a recording space.

If you have a great monitoring situation you can make good decisions about where to place your musicians and mics so as to make best use of your recording room... treated or not.

    best,
    mike
