Is that it??

It's been a couple months since the last update and I'm sensing that people are settling in with X1. So is that it? Are we done?
Will the next update be paid for, or will it be free? These are the questions I'm having and I'm wondering what the consensus is amongst the user base. I'm not as familiar with the Cake business model as many of you are. My upgrade path was DOS, Sonar 2, 6, 8.5 and of course X1. I'm totally on board with X1 but I miss the predictability of the earlier releases.
I'd really like some sort of update from CW brass indicating what the plan is. Does that sound unreasonable?

Regards, John

I predict something will be for sale in November to feed the finance cycle.

I wish I had reason to be optimistic that it will be something I will find interest in.

I'll send in the money... but I haven't enjoyed any tangible value in an upgrade since SONAR version 6.

7, 8 and 8.5 were like maintenance releases with a goodies bag thrown in. X1 was just sort of a disaster... and making it half price at $99 didn't excuse the insult. I'm not using it so it hasn't even proven to be a maintenance release for me. My upgrade purchase was more like a donation.

    I'll do again next November.

    We'll see how it goes.

    best regards,
    mike

And of course we appreciate your support Mike. Hopefully we can give you something you feel is worthwhile at some point in return.

Surely the next bun out of the oven is X1c, a final sweep-up for this year of remaining bugs and fixes, including the corrections related to the AVX instruction set (cf. posts re. Sandy Bridge processors running Windows 7 SP1 getting errors in Sonar X1)?

Okay, so the response to my post was essentially "wait and see". Not what I was looking for, but it is the answer I'm most familiar with.
Come on, this is not the time for vague statements. I need to budget for these kind of expenses. If you're going to make me pay to get X1 in a more stable configuration I want to know. I've bought a full cakewalk system this year, plus X1, plus many upgrades to the included LE software.
Could you tell me if I have to shell out more money this year on my X1 adventure. A response of likely or not likely would be specific enough.

I can't really tell you what the product plan is and FWIW I don't think most companies would respond with this information if asked. (Ask Apple when they're going to put out a new iPad and see what kind of response you get. )

But I did want to help though. I was trying to say more than "wait and see". I was trying to say to you "No, that's not it."

Brandon, I appreciate how active you guys have been with these threads. I do have a question though. Why is all this stuff so hush hush all the time? Like for example, you made a mention about asking Apple about an iPad. You guys ain't Apple and I'm happy you're not! How often do customers get to talk to Apple guys on a forum every day? LOL! The one thing that I love about you and Seth and Willy etc, is you don't pull the big wig card like Apple and some of these other DAW companies that think their poo don't stink.

You make yourselves accessible to us which really means the world to us. Trust me, I would be willing to bet that the majority of users on this board believe that a few of you Baker guys really care about us as well as the product. Sure you need to make money to pay your bills, but it is my belief that you also put yourselves in our positions at times. That said, don't you ever feel in the position to just cry out to the suits:

"look, we're the creators of this...most times it works for us but we are having quite a few with some issues, legit options possibly brought back, bugs fixed that have been missed....we need to tell them it's being fixed and we need to tell them it will be fixed in this version so they don't have to pay for another with these fixes!"

I'd probably be fired if the above was true and I wasn't allowed to make a mention of it because I'd let it slip out. I could never be a sales man in real life because often times, you are forced to sell something in secrecy that you wouldn't buy yourself to some poor baystid and I'd be the one to say "dude, don't buy this...go down the street and get this instead." I'm not saying that's what Sonar is..lol...just an analogy of my honesty. :)

But I really don't even see the need for secrecy for something like fixes or options possibly brought back and bugs/things fixed. Can't you make a phony name and spill the beans? LOL! See that's the thing I can't get around...the secrecy of updates. Is it because you truly don't know what the outcome is going to be or is it because you are sworn to secrecy? I mean granted, it's not like we are going to see anything groundbreaking in an update that would be detrimental to the company if it got out. The above said, I think you guys have improved in keeping us informed ten-fold with this release, but I just don't understand the secrecy of updates. Anything you can share about that?

Is it that misleading to say "we have 3 possible updates in the works. It looks like we may be going to X1e when all is said and done. We don't know for sure as this can change at any given time, but this is our worst case scenario and it is our plan to have this, this, that, this and this in tip top shape by the time we're through."

I'm not in the business you are, but I just can't seem to see where that could be harmful to your customers. No matter if you totally fail with X1 or make it the greatest DAW of all time, people still have choices in what they can purchase and the other guys that run the other DAW companies are still going to get access to your programs sooner or later to borrow from them. In a sense it's a bit like buying a car. Get a good Chevy, you buy another...if that's good, you buy another. When you get a bad one, you take a look at Ford and pretty much go on until you get screwed on something, ya know? :)

Apple informed us of when they would release their Ipad's I guess they sort of know how much money they will make from their pre orders.

The paying public kinda know what they are in for before they purchase.

I wish more companies were more forth coming with their pre release info like APPLE are!

Come on, you're deliberately missing his point here. Which was: businesses announce things when they are ready to announce them. Which is indeed often ahead of actual release - which was also the case with X1, and every other Sonar release I can remember - but not simply when people start demanding that they announce stuff.

In fairness, the orriginal question was "Is that it? or will there be another maintanence update?" and Brandon replied with "There is something on the horizon but I'm not saying what it is..."

So we still don't know if we're getting X1c soon or if we have to wait (and pay) for X2
