Is the ILok dongle the same as the Steinberg Key dongle?
I need to buy a Steinberg Key dongle, will this work with the new Sonar upgrades, or do I need to have an ILok as well?
I'm new to dongles...

I don't think so... I just got a VSL key, which is basically a syncrosoft dongle, works for Steinberg and a few others I think iLok is different but I'm not 100% sure

VSL usb can be used with Steinbeg products?? that would be good news, I might take another look at halion sonic

They absolutely are different and if you try to buy Nexus2 it requires the Steinberg dongle and they explicitly say on their site that it is NOT the same or compatible with the iLok dongle. Refx at least supplies the Steinberg dongle if you buy their product.

Threw my ilok in the back of the drawer...waste of money. Can't get it recognised on their web site and their 'help' is no help.

Interesting....I had the same problem with Syncrosoft key to run a trial for Cubase. I worked with Steinberg support for a day and never succeded in getting the license on there - this for running a trial. It's insane.... Good to know - then I know iLok is no better....can cause more problems than it's worth going through.

I still have a Emagic dongle.... What could I do with that?

if your ilok isnt being recognized, try changing browsers. I experienced problem and, had it confirmed by other users that Firefox updates sometimes cause conflicts. not sure if that may be a current issue, bit worth a try.

Yes I seen that having the right browser is needed. Safari was said to work good.

The Steinberg Key is an eLicenser and it has been cracked for ages - useless protection. Steinberg just makes it a pain for the honest customers.

but as far as i know, cubase 6 and/or any other steinberg products (New Ones) hasn't cracked yet!?
