Is the guitar the only instrument made in left-handed versions?
And are there any truly ambidextrous instruments?

SteveStrummerUK And are there any truly ambidextrous instruments? You could say that I'm a bit like Jimi Hendrix in that I use a right-handed can opener the 'wrong' way round. Rumour has it that Karyn's cowbell is truly ambidextrous. But on the other hand.............

Then of course there's the Trumpet. I can't play one of those with either hand.

My Alembic plays Am notes in any configuration. So do I. Actually, my stand up bass is bi-dextrous.

Janet The piano? I don't think a piano is ambidextrious. the left hand always plays the lower frequencies and the right hand always plays upper. upper is attributed to melodic, lower is attributed to "bass" or accompaniment. in fact, there are left handed pianos. http://lefthandedpiano.com/

Thanks for the link. At the bottom they have a link for a midi converter to change a keyboard to left handed. Imagine, as a prank, hooking that up and letting someone play.

Interesting stuff. Are trumpets and saxamaphones eg ambidextrous? I mean are the valve buttons and things always the same bilaterally? And what about banjos? You couldn't play one the 'wrong' way round like Jimi's Strat because of the shorter string.

Dear Mr. Straummy, Most wind instrument are setup to be played with both hands but I'd submit that it's like the piano in that most (if not all) notes are distributed between each hand and cannot be interchanged (I guess you could turn a tuba or a trombone upside down ala Hendrix if you really want to stand out in the band).

That left-handed keyboard is making my brain hurt.. I struggle with keyboard playing because I seem to want to play chords with my right hand and melody lines with my left. I don't think I could cope with a l/h keyboard though, because the chord shapes would be reversed too..wouldn't they?

mike_mccue I have a left handed snare drum. Aha, some people think drummers are stupid, but that's just a marketing ploy and I saw through it. So now I just get a standard right handed drum turn it upside down and play it with my foot. You'll have to get up early to catch me out.

I'd be disgusted with how Will makes people change hands for melody/chords too. (not to self, do not hire Will to teach me keyboard) BTW what that heck are melody/chords? Maybe you mean Melody's corduroys? Now there's some hand changing I'd be interested in hearing about.

bapu BTW what that heck are melody/chords? Hi, Naah! Melodies and chords are meaningless! Indeed dialectical critical realism may be seen under the aspect of Foucauldian strategic reversal-of the unholy trinity of Parmenidean/Platonic/Aristotelean provenance; of the Cartesian-Lockean-Humean-Kantian paradigm; of foundationalisms (in practice, fideistic foundationalisms) and irrationalisms (in practice, capricious exercises of the will-to-power or some other ideologically and/or psycho-somatically buried source) new and old alike; of the primordial failing of western philosophy, ontological monovalence, and its close ally, the epistemic fallacy with its ontic dual; of the analytic problematic laid down by Plato, which Hegel served only to replicate in his actualist monovalent analytic reinstatement in transfigurative reconciling dialectical connection, while in his hubristic claims for absolute idealism he inaugurated the Comtean, Kierkegaardian and Nietzschean eclipses of reason, replicating the fundaments of positivism through its transmutation route to the superidealism of a Baudrillard."
