Is the "mythical SampleTank3" really a myth?
I wonder. Wasn't 2.5 released over 5 years ago? They were talking about it in 2010. I hear a few things from time to time but it never gets released. I wonder if it's going to be abandoned. I moved on a while back and upgraded to Kontakt 4 but I'm just curious.

Too many iToys, too little time. I think it's in the works, but they've been doing so many other things at the same time, that it's not suprising that it's slipped quite a bit. Lots of work recently on AT 3.x + models, and, of course, the iToys. Squids from Sonic Reality (original content provider) mentioned it in some recent kvr posts... http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4813937

Thanks for the link to Squids comments ( http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4813937 --see the eleventh entry down the page by Squid). I had virtually given up on ST3. But it is good to hear that it will have backwards compatibility to ST2.5 and that it should actually be released this year.

All the devs are busy with iPhone apps. At least they know what we really want. Economics dictating development... (especially in a weak economy) If they sell a million copies of an app for $1, that's a lot of cash-flow. Don't like it either... but you can see why it happens.

The 50% off the Total Workstation may (or may not) be a sign that ST3 is somewhere around the corner.

Rain The 50% off the Total Workstation may (or may not) be a sign that ST3 is somewhere around the corner. Or it could be a sign that we are caught in a circular time warp whereby Total Workstation goes on sale w/ some tremendous discount every 12-14 months and everybody concludes "ST3 must be right around the corner!". :)

I really expected IK Obi to already have chimed in on this discussion, to give some inside info. I'm still doubting to buy the Total Workstation bundle... (but that's another fred)

Obi's not talking, despite many efforts to squeeze even a tidbit of information out of him. I think that's because they do not want to commit to a release date and risk missing it. Building a gigantic library is a complex, time-consuming project. Lots of last-minute tweaks and fixes. I'll probably wait for version 3.1 anyway. Unless they offer a can't-say-no introductory price.

I'm curious Bit. IS sample tank so much better than kontakt? I have ST version 2 and looked at it but didn't find anything that I didn't have in Komplete. I guess what I really want to know is if it's worth the time to open another set of help files and learn sample tank. Right now I'm spending 60% of my time reading, 30% on hardware and 10% actually recording and mixing. It's tough to be the noob in a sea of help files and e-readers.

On the surface, SampleTank is so far beneath Kontakt that you'd be a little embarrassed to mention them both in the same sentence. ST is very primitive by comparison. It really only matches Kontakt in one area: effects. ST's effects are good. I bought SampleTank in a group buy because it was cheap. I figured that even if it had only a couple usable patches it'd still be justifiable with the low price, and it might serve as a temporary placeholder. To my surprise, I found quite a lot of usable patches in there. When auditioned in solo, none of them sound particularly great, but - and this is key - they are easy to tuck into a mix. And the simplified libraries have a great side-benefit: efficiency. I can load up 10 SampleTank voices and my aged computer doesn't break a sweat. Can't do that with Kontakt!
