Is there a home for Project5 with Sonar 8.5?

Greetings All,

I am looking to get back into using Sonar again after a somewhat lengthy hiatus.  I had tinkered with Project5 in the past and own v2.5, but I am in no way an expert with the product and would still have a learning curve to get familiar with it.  I am going to be upgrading Sonar to 8.5 and rebuild my PC fresh, but I look at the lonely copy of P5 sitting on the desk and wonder if it is even worth installing it in parallel to Sonar, and adding to that, is it even worth taking the time to learn P5 at this point?

Are there people out there using both products in tandem and have any comments about how P5 can compliment Sonar's already vast list of features?

Thank you in advance for your consideration!

There are many who have used both - but they are apples/oranges. Sonar (esp. Producer Version) is a full blown DAW with many tools for full production. Project 5 can be used for creating/sketching, etc. - but does not possess the full pallette of tools that are included in Sonar.
On the other hand, P5 as a creation station is pretty intuitive.
    Just my thoughts.

There's no reason not to use it if you want. However, you will have your hands full with all the new features, tools and plug-ins in Sonar 8.5 and maybe your time would be better spent with those. However, maybe one rainy day you might want to play around with Project 2.5. You can't sell it so you might as well use it.

    Sell it?
    Hmmmmm . . . .
The company has stopped supporting and developing it, and I still can't sell it if I were to find a buyer?
    Interesting.

I still have it installed on my laptop and I like to play around with it once in a while. It really is a great music creation tool. Too bad it didn't do well enough in the market. I think that could have been because of Ableton Live.

Here is an interesting thing to consider.  One big reason to not buy a used CW software is the non support from CW. That should not be a problem with a discontinued product. So sell it if you like. Who is going to complain?

Not that I recommend that. I just don't see how it could hurt CW or anyone else.

How can he sell something he doesn't own? He only owns the license to use it which is not transferable. It doesn't matter whether the product is no longer being developed.

Do you know for a fact that Cakewalk has released everyone from their legal obligation?

I guess that means I can sell my copies of Plasma and Pyro too (of course no one in their right mind would buy them). I think I paid $49 for my copy of Project 2.5 so what's it worth now... $5?

Yeah man, they blew P5 out for something like $29 a ways back. I doubt its resell value is high even if it were easily transferrable.

8.5 ported over some of the good stuff from P5: the arp and the matrix in particular. Still, it's patterns and PRV were frickin' awesome.

It's a shame it never took hold, but it was going up against stiff competition. Oh well, at least they slurped out some of the best parts for SONAR.

My two cents and I have a lot of two cents; Is ditch Project 5, I too brought it and used it in tandem with Sonar.  Sonar now have ported all the best features from Project 5 to Sonar but install all the effects that came with Project 5 except the ones that they now have in Sonar eg:  The Spectral Transformer, (love this baby but I think it is badly written even on my i5 I can only use one instance) also the Velocity drum machine and Pulse, oh and the Sampler.

All worthy tools that I use in Sonar 8.5.  So if any of you are thinking of selling your version of Project 5 and I know most of you are joking think again.

The one thing that did get me was I tried to install the Edirol sound module that came with Sonar and Project 5 and it did not work.  I know we have two sound modules already but it's always nice to have a third.

    The Spectral Transformer

Wow... flashbacks.   I haven't used that one in a long time, but I really liked it too.  It had a way of mangling sound that seemed to work differently than other plugins.    Now I'm going to have take her for a spin again...   ;)

Yea that was pehaps one of the best plugs that Cakewalk brought out so many options, I used it recently to simulate 4 part harmony on vocals.

I'm getting ready to install Sonar 8.5 on a new machine, and am also wondering about what to do with Project5.  I don't intend to use the Project5 program itself, but am wondering if Project5 has are any plugins that I can use with Sonar, and that are worth using.

I also have both Sonar and Project5. In my case, I just couldn't get my head around the Project 5 workflow, and I decided to invest my time learning more about Sonar instead.

I do keep P5 around in case one of my kids want to mess with it.

I am glad to have found this conversation.  I love P5.  The workflow makes the most sense and I have used it for years.  I used to Rewire it into SONAR 4, then 8. However, I'm having trouble rewiring it into Sonar8.5 Producer (upgraded earlier this summer).    The MIDI workflow for Sonar is just too complex for me and I want to continue to sequence with my fav P5 while saving the vocals for Sonar.

When I rewire P5 now, I can no longer play the project or sequence within P5.  It's rewired but my MIDI controller produces no sound and the P5 "play" button no longer works.

    What gives?!
