Is there a way..

to change tempo in a project without effecting a midi clip? I have a project where the tempo wasn't set prior to recording the midi (for pianio). So now I need to set the tempo in the project to match the original audio and don't want to effect the timing of the piano part.

Have you tried freezing the synth that the midi channel sends it to? This should create an audio file for it

Midi when grooved clips will follow any tempo. Its a non issue if you change the tempo and your concerened about the midid data .Just change it and make sure you grrove cliped the midi clips

The problem is that the tempo was not set in the project when the midi data was recorded. So the midi piano part was recorded to the audio 'scratch' track in the project, even though it did not match the default tempo in the project. Now, I want to set the tempo to match existing audio and midi playing, but if I change the tempo of the project, the midi will be changed. I need to change the tempo without effecting the existing midi. Maybe there's no good way to do that?

Set the desired tempo and then use the Process/Length function to change the midi: use it to stretch or shorten the midi notes/event. With a little patience you should have it sorted.

Keep in mind that the results are going to be mixed if/considering the audio doesn't follow a consistent tempo. Maybe you're better off just proceeding without a tempo map.

Use AudioSnap's "SET MEASURE/BEAT AT NOW" functionality to build a tempo map for the original performance, then follow CJ's advice.

Thanks Richard. Using the 'Length' command worked great :)

if/considering the audio doesn't follow a consistent tempo

If the tempo is quite variable, you could try this. Copy the piano track and delete notes so that you have one note (and only one note) on each beat. Eliminate any notes that are not "beat notes". You may need to add notes where there are beats with no associated note on events. Then use fit-to-improve, using the copied/edited track as the beat track, to create the tempo map.

Oh yes, and one more thing. Make sure you only have note events in the beat track. In particular, remove any sustain pedal events, if present.

    Ahem ... I did mean fit-to-improv.

Richard's suggestion worked fine. No need to edit the midi manually, just had to use the Length command, once the tempo was set to match the audio file.
