Is there a way to link a MIDI track to an Audio track?

Hi peeps,

Just a quick question; Is there a way to link a MIDI track with an Audio track, so that it behave similar to a VSTi?

I'm just getting back into using my old MIDI hardware synths, and the last time I used them I wasn't routing the audio back into Sonar (or Cakewalk as it was back then).

If a project is playing and I hit the solo button on an Audio track, is mutes everything else, including its associated MIDI track, so nothing plays, of course.

The only way I can see how to achieve this is to create groups and add the mute button (or solo button) of a pair of associated MIDI/Audio tracks.

Grouping isn't a problem... I was just wondering if there was another way.

I've looked at the help file and I cannot see any other way of achieving this.

cheers

andy

Another way is to put the tracks in a folder and use the folder's Mute/Solo buttons. But there's no built-in method for associating MIDI and Audio tracks with a hardware synth like the Simple Instrument track for soft synths.

SONAR Platinum x64, 2x MOTU 2408/PCIe-424  (24-bit, 48kHz)

Thanks Dave,

Yeah, I had considered that.

The problem I have with that is I've lumped all of my MIDI and Audio tracks associated with a particular multi-timbral synth into one folder.

I suppose I could have a rethink about that... It just seemed easier to bring in a track template which contained all the bit and pieces I need for once synth in one go.

It's a pity we couldn't have folders within folders...........

cheers

I've had a think about this and I think it is best to create groups.

The folders idea works fine, when in Track view, but in Console view, you cannot see Folders, and when you click on the Mute or Solo buttons it only changes the state of the track that you choose.

So, yeah... Groups it is then...

There's been a feature request for nested folders going back several versions

I would seriously welcome this

Me too Jonesey, but I think I'd still end up using groups for the purpose of muting/soloing an Audio track and it's associated MIDI track.

It's a pity we cannot say, "hey, Sonar, this MIDI track and Audio track are associated and when I solo one I want to solo the other." Otherwise you have to switch to Track View to solo/mute folders, and I like to be able to do that from Console view. And the only way I can do that at the moment is with Groups.

I'm not in studio at the moment, but I have an idea.

Use an instrument track with any small vsti. Deactivate this vsti in the rack, because it's only for dummy to create an insturment track. Set the Midi-out of the instrument track to your desired port and channel of your gear.
Put in FX the Sidechain-Mixer (http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3164260) plugin.
Create an audio track and select the sidechain in Sends. Maybe hide this audio track from track and mixer list.

If I'm not wrong, from this state you should be able to solo/mute your midi and audio in the instrument track.
