Is there a way to.....

Is there a way to change a group of notes on one midi track to a different channel then change them back. For instance, I know that I can right click on a note (in piano roll view)and change the channel. What I want to do is change select a group of notes and change all of them and leave the others unchanged. This way I don't have to change them individually. Thanks, Aric

I'm not sure what you want to do but the Event Inspector can do all sorts of things with MIDI. One of them is changing selected notes. Or notes in a range.

John is right.  Use the EVENT INSPECTOR (it's very powerful anyway).

I'm using PLAY and I want to use one instance of PLAY per instrument. For each instrument, say french horn, I want to load a keyswitch controlled french horn on Channel 1 and a MOD wheel controlled french horn on channel 2. For sustained tones I want to use the MOD controlled french horn (ch. 2) because when the volume changes the timbre changes. For shorter notes I want to use the keyswitch french horn (ch. 1) because switching articulations is more efficient and sustained notes do not change timbre with keyswitches. Currently I have an entire french horn part on one track with all of the notes on the same channel. If I wanted to change the channel for half of them do I need to right click on each individual note in piano roll view or can I do a group of notes at once? I also know that I can change this in the event inspector, but this also requires me to change each individual note one by one as well. Is there a faster way? I hope this explains things a bit more. Thanks, Aric

I have been faced with that sort of thing. What I will do is copy the sections to a new MIDI track and send that to the instrument I want for those notes. You can use split to cut the MIDI track up and simply drag the parts to another track.

In others words add as many tracks as needed to send to the channels you want.

You don't need to have all the notes on a single track.

I'm not sure I totally understand,  but don't take that personally it happens often in many situations....

Anyways,  What I would do is copy the original track,  then delete half the notes on each track.  You will be able to fairly quickly grab all the notes you don't want for one keyswitch and delete them.  Then repeat the process for the next track.

I use to do something similar for String tracks, but started to find that you can have both short and long notes triggered and the same time and it will fatted the sound some. It can work better sometimes with both notes triggering unless they are triggering the same sample,  then you will have phase and "note off"  issues.

    Hope that helps...

That is basically the idea above. The idea being to use more than one MIDI track.

+1 on the Event inspector. Select the notes and change the channel in the Event Inspector - Channel drop down box.

You can manipulate MIDI notes in a variety of ways using the Event Inspector in SONAR. Check out this video for more info...

Thanks Scott! This is exactly what I want to do. I was trying to use the "event list" not the "event inspector" to accomplish what I was trying to do. Bristol, your link led me to a youtube tutorial on how combine drum maps to control keyswitches in EWQLSO. I did not know this was possible. Between you and Scott this will completely change my workflow(for the better). The only thing still don't get is how to set up and use drum maps. Scott do you have any videos? Thanks to both of you. No problem. Glad to help!

Sorry though... no videos on Drum Maps, although I'm sure there are some out there if you do a search on Google or YouTube.
